E's age: 8

"You're lucky your father isn't here," Mother said as she held Espresso's shoulders. "You'd be dead by now."

He looked up at her with tear-filled eyes. Mother was really mad today. All because he got an 86% on his spelling test. He didn't mean to score low on the spelling test, he tried his hardest. But she didn't seem to understand that.

"Look at you." She grabbed his face, glaring at the tears that were starting to roll down his cheeks. "You're crying! For no reason! You're so damn sensitive, Espresso." She wiped the tears off his face before shoving him backward.

He stumbled back, barely regaining his balance. "I'm sorry," He mumbled as he shifted his weight. "I'm trying not to cry. I'm trying to get good grades."

She scoffed. "No, you're not."

His frown deepened. He hated it when she did that. He really was trying his hardest. His eyes trailed back up to hers. "No, I'm honestly trying. I really am! Why don't you-"

"Are you talking back to me?!" She interrupted, scowling down at him.

"...No, ma'am."

She smiled. It wasn't a nice smile. "Good."

Silence filled the room for a moment.

"Are you done yelling at me?"

She stared at him, clearly angry at his disrespectfulness. "Fine," Mother barked, throwing her arms up in defeat. "Fine. I give up. Yes, Espresso, I'm done yelling at you." She crossed her arms, leaning back against the wall.

Espresso turned, grabbing Mr Teddy from his bed, hugging him tightly to calm himself. He held him close as he rested his head on top of his teddy. Even if nobody else loved him, Mr Teddy was always there for him.

Another disgusted scoff came from his mother. "You still have that teddy? Come on, you're, like, 8?" You don't need a stupid stuffed bear."

Espresso glanced up at her. "H...He really calms me down."

"Calms you down?" Mother raised her eyebrows. "Espresso, you don't need a teddy bear anymore. You're a growing boy."

He furrowed his eyebrows. "I know I don't need him, but... But he's my best friend. He's really kind to me, and I really like him."

She sighed as she stepped up to him. She held out her hand. "Give it to me."

Espresso's eyes widened. "Why?"

"Give it to me!" She repeated, trying to grab Mr Teddy.

He gasped as he held his teddy close. Mother was trying to take Mr Teddy from him. Tears clouded his eyes. "No..! No, please don't take him from me!"

She gritted her teeth as she kept trying to grab his teddy.

"Please, don't!! Mother, please!" He sobbed.

"Why are you making this so difficult?!" Mother yelled.

"He's my teddy! Don't take him!!"

"Give me the damn bear!" She got a hold of his teddy's arms and started pulling.

Espresso watched in horror as Mr Teddy's arm started to rip. Tears began to roll down his cheeks as he desperately tried to stop his mother from ripping the arm off.

A cruel smile grew on Mother's face as she watched Espresso cry. She gave a final tug, ripping Mr Teddy's arm off.

Espresso let out a pained sob as he stared down at his teddy, which he held in his shaking hands. Stuffing was falling out of the hole. "Mr T-Teddy..!" He trembled as he tried to stop the stuffing from falling out. He stared up at his mother, trying to figure out why she was doing this.
