I watched attentively as the butterfly land softly on a yellow daffodil. I crouched down next to it, reached out and letting the delicate creature crawl onto my fingers. It made its way to the palm of my hand and it fluttered to the tips of my fingers. I watched silently as it left my left hand and moved to my right. I liked the silence I was in; calming and soothing.

"Danni!" Natalie screamed at me, scaring me and the butterfly. My little friend fluttered away and out of sight. "What are you doing?"

"Sitting. Quietly."

"Why?" She said crossing her arms.

"Because I like it. Why are you here?"

"Mom and Aunt El told me to come and get you. Dinner."

"I'm not hungry." I said going back to the flowers in front if me.

"You haven't eaten all day."

"Because I'm not hungry. Plus I won't eat what they cook."

"They got tofu patties for you."

"You can't cook it on the same surface as the meat. It defies the point."

"We'll there's salad. You can eat that can't you?"

"I'm not in the mood to be around people."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Nothing."

"You're getting your period aren't you?" She smirked.

"Go away Natalie." I dismissed.

"It is it, isn't it?"

I got up, annoyed. "Fine. I'll leave."

"Danielle..." She warned following behind. "I'm supposed to come back with you."

"That's not going to happen." I told her moving around the flowers and through the trees. I heard the running water of the lake and made sure I didn't slip into the embankment because that would have been another affair that ruined the beginning of my summer vacation.

"Danielle. Stop. Stop!"

"Go away! Leave me alone!" I shouted at her.

"What the hell is wrong with you?"

"Just want some alone time, can I have that?"

"Dan...you're my best friend, what aren't you tell me?"

If only she knew. "Nothing. I'm just agitated."

"Dan-"

"Shut up and go away! You annoying, talkative bitch!" I shouted and slammed a hand over my mouth to stop myself. I can't control myself anymore and I just said something I'll definitely regret. "Nat, I didn't mean it. I'm so sorry."

"You obvious need your space and I'm going to respect that." She walked through the clearing and disappeared. I'm a damn idiot.

I spent my whole day alone by the lake. Serene and peaceful, sitting near the edge, throwing rocks, picking grass, listening to frogs and cricket then I realized that it was way passed 11:30 and I needed to get home. Mom and dad are going to kill me, but Aunt Row and Uncle Dam might actually slaughter me for upsetting Nat.

I got in around noon and everyone was waiting like I suspected. I came in and closed the door, dropping my bag to the floor. I tugged on my long sleeves cardigan and jeans, even though it was 100 degrees outside. I have a weird body temp, anemia or something like that.

"Danielle..." My dad warned me when I came into the living room. His ember eyes angry. "Apologize. Now."

"Sorry Natalie." I said rather annoyed.

"What's wrong?" Aunt Row asked me.

"I wanted to be alone. I told her go away." I made me frustrated just talking about it. "I wanted to be alone and just kept nagging me."

"Doesn't give you the right to call me a bitch." She said.

"It doesn't. But respect my wishes to be left alone."

"I was calling you for dinner."

"I wasn't hungry." I said.

"Honey," my mother asked. "When's the last time you ate?"

"I don't remember," I sighed, "look I'm tired and I'm sorry Nat." I went to bed without any problems.

Breakfast was awkward. Mom and dad watched me them kept looking at each worriedly.

"What's wrong now? What'd I do?"

"Nothing honey," my mom said giving dad a glance. "Are you sure you're alright?"

"Period. That's all." I lied. Nobody knew that I haven't eaten in days or the facts my body is changing dramatically. Or that I'm seeing weird things like shadows that don't belong to anyone or hear eerie groans and screams.

"Are you sure?"

"Yup. That cramps bother me so much that I can barely eat. I do when I can. I promise you mom." Mom smiled, but dad not so easily convinced.

"I'm doing over to the lake again," I said. "I'll be back soon."

"Why don't you hangout with Nat or your friends anymore?" Dad dug.

"For the same reason as yesterday." I said. "They get extra annoying around my period and I don't want to say anything I'll regret."

"There's going to be a bonfire," he said, "Spencer is coming home on Friday."

"Okay, I'll be there." I have no clue if I'll be there or not.

"You better be, he's been in the Amazon for some time, he probably misses us all."

"Training there makes you stronger. Damon and I know what's best for the boy."

I got up, plate untouched. "I'll see you guys later."

The suns rays highlighted my path and I walked on, finally warm enough to put on some denim shorts and a sheer, loose sleeve top over my normal strapless bralette. My shoulder bag towing behind me, I was in my way to my daily sanctuary. My second, better home.

I heard the noises again. The scratchy, strangulated cry. Whether it be human, wolf, or even deer, it was a helpless cry I could never pinpoint or help. I've learned to ignored them, let it know I didn't hear it or that I was scared and terrified especially at night, in hopes maybe it would stop.

I got to the lake and sat down. That's how I spent the rest of my afternoon until 8:30 when I went home.

~

It started again. The screaming. I sat up in bed trying to located the loud, eye piercing sounding. I scrabbled about, hands on ears looking for it. I got out of bed an walked over to the vanity space in my room. I tried to collect myself; controlling my feelings before I would explode. My eyes rimmed with agitated tears swelled and reddened my hazel and ember eyes...

I looked closer at the mirror, unable to believe what was wrong with my eyes. I turned on my light and when back to the mirror, hoping the moonlight made my vision askew. No. It was right, a deep, rich purple ring surround my pupils and irises. How the hell am I going to lie myself out of this one?
