"So..." I said casually drinking my milkshake while sitting across from Spencer at the diner. "My parents..."
"Are freaking out. They knew about my search and that I would eventually find you, so they're waiting for me to report back."
"You can't do that and we can't go back."
"Why not?"
"Because," I sighed. "Just because."
"'Because' isn't an answer. Why the hell won't you trust me? I mean I've known you since you were born, and I'm your damn mate, why do I have to fight my way in?"
"Whatever."
"No, it's not whatever."
"Drop it Spencer."
"No."
"Why keep poking at a dead horse?"
"Because it's still kicking."
"I'm done with this," I got up. "Are you ready?'
"We're not done."
"We most certainly are."
"You're not going to end this."
"I just did." I started to walk away and he grabbed me by the upper arm and pushed me against the table.
"We're going home."
"You are, I'm not."
"Is there a problem here?" A waitress asked.
"No." We both said in unison without taking our eyes off each other.
"Alrighty then," she said and started to take the dishes away. "Have a nice day y'all...?"
~
"You're so immature." I said in the car.
"Yeah, totally." He replied sarcastically.
"Stop the car."
"Nope."
"I'll jump out."
He sped the car up to 60 mph and I glared.
"Stop!"
"No!"
I reached over and started hitting him, not caring if we got into an accident. He skillfully blocked my blows and swerved the car over to hold me down. I clawed and scratched his neck. When I realized I stopped, I tried unlocking the door, but to no avail, I won't. He must've put the child lock on. Who has a child lock on the passenger door?
"God I hate you." I said pinching the bridge of my nose. "If you want to help, then help. If not, stay out if my fucking way so I can destroy this thing before life as we know it perishes into the fiery depths of hell."
"Like you're the most pleasant person to be with all the time and you're being a little melodramatic."
I huffed annoyed, "I'm not overdramatic, you just don't understand the severity of this whole thing."
"I don't? I almost ripped my hair out trying to look for Ms. All-of-a-sudden-I-want-to-be-the-heroine-even-though-I-still-hate-everyone."
"I don't hate anyone."
"You hate me."
"I don't hate you."
"Then why say it?"
"Because you're aggravating!"
"I'm trying to help."
"Help? That's funny because you're only here for your benefit."
"That's not true. I care about your safety."
I glared at him menacingly and ignored him. "I'm trying to save lives and your trying to keep me all to yourself."
"I want what's best for you-"
"How the hell do you know what that is? You've be back-for what? Couple weeks?-Not even and you think you know me? You've been gone for 6 years. Six years! So don't say you know what's best for me because I will tell you what's best for me you hypocritical jerk."
He stared at the road and I looked the other way for the duration of the ride. After another day drive if our 3 day drive, he pulled into another hotel, this time we got connecting rooms. Separate, but connected. Still not as far as I would like.
~
He was waiting out front around 4:30 the next morning, leaning against the trunk absentmindedly.
"Morning," he said hopefully.
I ignored him and tossed my things in. I grabbed the handle and he stopped me.
"Let me go-"
He kissed me softly, more or less to shut me up, and when I did, he pressed me against the car door, pressing more passionately.
I almost forgot what he meant to me, what he is to me. It felt so good to touch him, feel the sparks and tingles up my spine.
I curled my hands around his collar, pulling him closer, and his lips hover over mine.
"I'm sorry."
"Me too." I pulled him back and he smiled.
"We should go."
His heart was pounding.
"And I should eat." I noticed as my stomach growled.
"Alright," he brushed against my hand. "This time I get to choose."
I climbed in and he followed. "I have a bad feeling about that."
"Why?"
"You suck at picking places to eat."
"No I'm not."
"Yeah. Yeah you are."
"No I'm not-" I kissed him.
"Shush and drive."
