PETE

Pete adjusted himself on the passenger seat for what he believed it was the fifth time during the twenty minutes Vegas was out, speaking on the phone with Kinn. Despite being still quite early in the morning and the day barely starting, Pete was already feeling quite tired. He didn’t say anything to Vegas in order to not worry him, but he barely slept the night before; Pete didn’t know why, but there was a strange feeling growing inside his heart, compressing his chest and making a little bit difficult to breathe.

To be honest, the feeling was quite familiar to the one he felt that night when Yìchen’s men tried to break inside the vault in Ekamai, the feeling that something bad was about to happen. He tried to get some sleep, to get into a comfortable position; but in the end, all he could do was lay there starring the ceiling while Vegas was sound asleep right beside him. So, even if the day barely begun for them, a poor night of sleep together with the amount of stress they’ve been put through with all the information Lin Sang brought, was not doing any wonders to Pete’s growing exhaustion.

“Are you okay?” Lin Sang asked with his raspy voice, startling Pete a little bit. “I can hear you shifting on your seat... and you did that a lot since he got out of the car.”

“Oh... right, I’m sorry.” Pete said trying to sound as calm as he could. “It’s just... I’m a bit nervous, that’s all.”

“About the call?” Lin Sang asked; sounding truly curious.

“Sort of.” Pete said a little rougher than he initially intended. After all, he and Lin Sang weren’t friends or anything like that for him to share his worries with the man he barely knew. “Don’t worry about me, I’m fine.”

It was something that Pete wasn’t so sure of, but, somehow, speaking that out loud kind of helped him to start to believe that he would truly be okay if he just took that time to rest a bit and remain seated until the odd sensation passes.

“Today is quite a hot day.” Lin Sang started. “Quite hotter than the others had been earlier this week... and with all the stress, the seating for so long... maybe that’s not good for the baby.”

Pete nodded, but then, he suddenly frowned. How the hell Lin Sang knew about that?

“What did you say?” Pete asked, shifting his body once again to look at Lin Sang’s face. “H-how do you know?”

Lin Sang just smiled, the first time Pete saw him smiling since bumping into him inside the market. It was a weird smile, but Pete just brushed that off with the growing curiosity of how that man knew about his pregnancy.

“Just because I’m blind now it doesn’t mean that I’m completely oblivious to what happens at my surroundings, Pete. Your grandpa kept murmuring stuff while opening the stall... he’s not that good at keeping things to himself and I’m a very good listener.” Lin Sang said with a smirk on his face. “Besides, I was an investigator before, remember? I know how to recognize facts and put two and two together.”

“This is not listening or realizing things, this is eavesdropping.” Pete said, still frowning.

“Maybe...” Lin Sang’s voice sounded a little distant, like he had just lost himself in his own thoughts. “I was trained to do that and, to be honest, I used to do it very well.”

Pete shifted on his seat once more, feeling the familiar stiffness on his lower back starting to form again. Being him, he didn’t want to tell Vegas that he wasn’t feeling that well since they left the market; he would just freak out and call doctor Taya a hundred times. But honestly, Pete was starting to regret of his decision a little bit. There was a weird feeling on his lower belly, one that he couldn’t identify or brush it off; one that was starting to left him a bit uneasy.
