PETE

The following day after Vegas’s departure, it rained.

Pete didn’t know if the rain was previously waited by the villagers there or if that was just a bad joke the entire universe was playing on him. He was sitting by the couch, his entire body turned towards the window right behind him and a steamy cup of hot ginger tea on his hands; the white smoke slowly coming out of it and filling his nose with the strong scent. Out there, big fat raindrops were falling like crazy from the sky, the sound of them hitting the window and the ceiling was like rocks falling all over, the wind was howling and whatever was the sunlight that intended to shine that morning was well hidden behind the dark gray clouds.

The entire weather matched quite well with how Pete was feeling that morning; he woke up earlier than everyone else in the house, feeling too nauseated to ignore and go back to sleep. Not that he was actually sleeping that well before deciding to wake up. So, with a special effort to not wake Tankhun as well, Pete managed to get up from his bed and go all the way to the kitchen downstairs and prepare himself some ginger tea. If Vegas was here, he would definitely scold Pete for leaving his bed, saying that he was going to be the one getting up to grab the tea for him; all of that while talking nonstop about how a good sleep and a good rest was incredibly important for a pregnant person. Maybe it was just Pete’s imagination, but when he felt Venice kick lightly when the last thought crossed his mind, he smiled thinking that Venice would probably agree with him too.

“You’re also missing his constant nagging over us, huh?” Pete whispered while cupping his lower abdomen with his free hand. “I wonder what dad is doing right now... maybe it’s raining there as well...”

It was a bit funny, actually. Pete never thought of himself as someone who would casually speak with a person, he hadn’t even met yet and he wasn’t sure if it could really hear. But he caught himself speaking to his kid more often as the weeks went by; never in front of others, not because of shame or anything like that, but much more because that moment felt like something only the two of them shared. He caught Vegas doing it once too, when he was taking a nap a few days ago. He pretended to be asleep, not wanting Vegas to feel embarrassed.

Vegas... damn, he missed his fiancée like crazy now and it has been barely a day since he left. Because he was inside of a plane with bad phone service, Vegas wasn’t able to call Pete that night, before he went to bed. Instead, he texted him a few hours before Pete finally woke up, saying that the trip was a bit tiring, but everything was fine, and they were already well accommodated in the hotel. Pete felt like he could breathe a bit easily after hearing that, but honestly, they weren’t even at the beginning of what was to come; so, even after reading Vegas’s message saying that everything was fine, Pete still felt a bit uneasy.

“Why are you awake this early?” A familiar voice brought Pete back from his thoughts, catching his attention and making him look towards the source of that voice. “Did something happen? Are you feeling ill?”

Pete smiled a little when he saw Charlie standing near the end of the stairs. Judging by her clothes, she was probably heading off for her morning exercises; the blue tank top and the pair of black leggings were enough clue anyways.

“I see that Vegas probably left you with the ‘constant nagging’ mission.” Pete joked and Charlie rolled her eyes at him while tying her hair up. “I’m fine, it’s just... too much nausea.”

“I thought these ones were much behind you already.”

Pete took a deep breath when a particularly strong wave of nausea hit him, and he did his best to not throw up in front of Charlie. She carefully walked towards him and eased herself beside Pete on the couch, gently caressing his back as he tried to keep his dinner and the tea down.
