PETE

For a moment, everything seemed to be quiet, silent. But not that type of silence that brings you comfort and inner peace; it was the type of silence that makes you wanna scream and cause your bones to chill. On that silent moment, all Pete could hear was the beating of his heart, echoing on his ears like loud sirens, making his entire body shake. There was darkness everywhere, creeping up upon him and making him feel even more uneasy than he already was. He couldn’t tell where he was or if he was alone or not, but between the last two options, he really wished he was. It was awfully cold and Pete didn’t know where he was going, but his legs were definitely taking him somewhere.

Suddenly, there was a faint light that appeared far away, but despite his mind screaming at him to not go there, he started to run towards the light, following the faint familiar sound that started coming from there. Soon, he was standing next to a white door and, strangely, he could hear the sound of his own voice screaming Vegas’s name on the other side; bringing back the memories of a bloody night, where the love of his life lied lifeless on his arms. Pete held the door handle with force, feeling like the whole place was spinning, the fear of opening it started to flood his heart. But then, he started to hear a whistle, annoyingly getting louder inside his head, making him block both of his ears with his palms and squat with the noisy painful little thing.

Pete closed his eyes tightly and wished hard for the whistle to vanish. But when he opened his eyes again, both of his hands were trapped on the car wheel while the thing gained speed at each passing second. He was hyperventilating, looking around desperately, trying to find someone, some help, something that could stop the car and release him from there. When he looked to the front, there was a big wall right ahead, made of gray strong bricks, getting closer and closer as the car would increase its speed little by little.

“I’m dying.” He thought. “I’m going to die.”

Pete tried to let the car wheel go, but his hands were glued on the damn thing. His legs were paralyzed, completely unable to hit the brakes and stop the car. He tried to scream, but absolutely nothing came, only a muffled sound, like he didn’t have a voice anymore. Pete shook his body violently, trying everything he could to wake his body up to do something, to save himself; but then he realized that it didn’t matter how much he shook himself, his body was completely still, not even a muscle moving. The wall was getting closer... he could almost see the brick’s texture...

He was dying. Pete was dying and there was nothing he could do to try to prevent that from happening. Vegas would cry, his grandpa and grandma would be devastated, he wouldn’t be able to take Macau to the appointment he scheduled, he wouldn’t be able to see him graduate, he wouldn’t be able to apologize to Tankhun for breaking his promise... he would break his promise to never let Vegas alone like the others did...

But, before Pete could close his eyes and accept his inevitable fate, he heard a click coming from the door, right next to him. He looked at it just to see the door hanging open, miraculously there yet, not being ripped off by the speed of the car against the road. Come on, he had been a bodyguard for years; he always had to choose the best option in every situation of his life and now... now was one of them. Taking a deep breath, Pete gathered enough force to move his body and throw himself to the side, felling the wind outside hit his face with force before he was embraced by the same cold darkness again...

With a loud and desperate gasp, Pete woke up, immediately sitting on his bed with his eyes wide open. His heart was beating crazily fast inside his chest and his mouth was strangely dry, like he didn’t drink water for days. He started to look around franticly, really desperate to find where he was, only to prove to himself that that had only been a dream.
