Damon Salvator's life was a tragic tale, filled with betrayal, heartbreak, grief and anger but all those negative feelings changed when the love of his life, Elena Gilbert woke up from her magical-induced coma. He had spent 153 years as a vampire and had truly enjoyed immortality, though there were times when the loneliness became all too much for him to handle and so, when the offer to become human once again with the woman he loved, he took it without a second thought.

It has been three years since he married Elena and everything was amazing and filled with such intense passion that they could hardly keep their hands off one another. However, for the last month he had noticed how distant his wife had become, staying out later than usual and was far less affectionate than she ever had been. At first, he thought he was being paranoid or she was simply too exhausted from her long shifts at the hospital, but then he would notice she would start bringing her phone with her everywhere she went which wasn't something that she normally did. Damon made the decision to stay silent and simply observe her behaviour, hoping that things would change but as time went on, it seems to get worse to the point she would hardly speak or acknowledge him anymore.

He knew going through her phone was an invasion of privacy and was disgusted with himself for even having the thought to do so, but he just couldn't deal with her behaviour any longer and wanted to find out what the cause was. whether or not he liked the answer, he needed to know. He waited for the brunette to fall asleep one evening and knew it was going to be a deep one since she had one and a half bottles of wine at dinner, which had recently become a recurring thing.

He quietly stepped out of bed and tiptoed to her side, grabbing her phone off the side table before making his way out of the room. He locked himself in the bathroom and sat on the edge of the tub, he contemplated his decision for the second time before pushing himself to complete the task.

"Fuck" He hissed as he looked down at the screen, remembering that it needed a password to get into it. He sat in deep thought for a few moments, dates of different occasions going through his mind which could all be a possibility for the password.

"Hm" He hummed as a certain date stuck out to him more than others, and though he highly doubted that she'd use her birthday, there was no harm in trying. He slowly typed out the date and much to his utter surprise, her Home Screen lit up with all her apps open to be investigated.

"Too damn easy" He chuckled quietly to himself before clicking on her messages. He noticed a few unseen texts from both Caroline and Bonnie, along with some of her co-workers and Matt Donovan but what caught his attention was a message from someone with the contact name 'P'

As he clicked on the message, a deep frown formed on his face as he noticed a lot of heart emojis being used between the two. He scrolled to the top and his heart broke at what he was reading.

P: Where are you baby, I miss you♥️

Me: I'm sorry handsome, he keeps questioning me. I'll be there as quick as I can😭♥️

P: when are you going to leave him, Elena?

Me: soon, I promise but he won't let me go easily. I'm scared😭

P: I'll sort it, princess. You'll be in my arms soon enough♥️

Damon's fingers clenched around the phone, tears pouring from his eyes as he felt his heart break into a million pieces. He should have known something like this would happen, Elena was his brother's girlfriend first before deciding she wanted him instead. She had a habit of falling for others whilst being in a relationship, he just never thought she would do it to him with everything they had gone through together.

'Just like Katherine' he thought bitterly, glaring at the wall which she was on the other side of.

He wanted to scream and smash as much things as he could, but most importantly, he wanted to talk to his brother. They should have known, they should have seen who she truly was behind those brown doe eyes and flattering smile. They should have seen the manipulation and the sneakiness because Katherine had done the same thing. It seems the doppelgängers are a lot more alike than they originally thought.

A few days later, Damon was sat on his couch with a glass of bourbon in his hand, staring absently into the fireplace. He hadn't confronted Elena about the messages, deciding to get his affairs in order before making the final move to end their marriage.

He was so lost in thought, he hadn't heard the lock to the front door turn nor did he hear the creek of the old wood swinging open. However, the sound of footsteps made him tense as he assumed it was Elena returning home from work.

"You're early" He called out before taking a sip of his beverage. However, when no response came, he placed his glass on the side table and peaked around the armchair, instantly seeing a larger figure standing within the shadows.

He jumped from his seat, glaring at the figure. "Who the fuck are you?"

The figure stepped out the shadow with a vicious smirk on his face, making Damon a little uneasy. It was in that moment that he wished he was once again a vampire, knowing that he could kill the intruder within a blink of an eye. Never before had he felt so... powerless and fragile, it made his hatred for Elena increase because he became human for her, so they could start a life together and yet, she cheated on him like it meant nothing to her.

"You must be Damon" The man said as he took a few steps forward, making Damon more on edge especially when he noticed the hand gun in his hand.

"Yep, that's me. What do you want?" Damon questioned through clenched teeth, his eyes flicking between the strangers face and the weapon.

"I'm here to do Elena a favour" He chuckled darkly and for a moment, Damon's eyes widened at his wife's name coming from the strangers mouth.

"What does Ele-" realisation struck him like a ton of bricks, making him stumble back only slightly. It was clear to Damon that Elena had either hired this man to kill him or he was the brunette's lover, maybe even both.

"I assume you're P?" Another chuckle left the man's lips, more cold and intimidating than before.

"That's me. Elena wishes she could be here but... she's in my bed, waiting patiently" Damon's hands clenched almost immediately, his nails digging into his palms as he glared at 'P' who was smirking in his direction.

"You can keep her, she's nothing but a dirty whore-" Before Damon could complete his sentence, a loud bang was heard and suddenly, his knees buckled from underneath him as pain struck his stomach.

"Shit" He groaned as he looked down, blood pouring out of his shirt from the bullet wound. The pain increased and his vision began to blur, resulting in him falling to the side as the thick red liquid poured onto the wooden floor.

He knew he was going to die, there was no doubt about it but the pain in his stomach was nothing compared to the pain he felt, knowing his wife was responsible for this.

As his body weakened and his consciousness was drifting, all he could do was wish he never met the brunette. He wished he could change the past and save his brother from all the pain he went through when the doppelgänger entered their lives. He wished he was kinder to not only Stefan but those he met along the way. He had so many regrets but none were as bad as having Elena Gilbert in his life.

It was at 9:30 pm that Damon Salvator took his last breath... as a human.
