"Hello sweetie, are you here by yourself today?" A scary lady asked a timid 5 year old, that was desperately clutching her teddy bear.
The girl nodded and held out her ticket. With a sad smile the attendant checked her in and had someone escort her to the correct gate. Once the girl got her backpack from the cart she rode in, the man driving took off.
"Over here sweetie, I'll have someone take you to your seat."
Another lady guided her through the gate and helped get her into first class. Once her backpack was stored with help from a stewardess, the girl sat down and hid her face in her teddy. As they were getting ready to close the plane, another stewardess noticed the girl and she felt a pang in her heart. It was usually the children who flew unattended that got to her. She was a mother to a 6 year old and this girl looked to be the around the same age. She couldn't even imagine being that young and venturing off in an airplane full of strangers with no one accompanying her.
"Hey there my love, are you doing okay?" She couldn't help walk over to the girl and soothe her hair.
The little girl looked up at her, tears brimming at the edge of her little brown eyes.
"It's okay. What's your name sweetie?"
The girl was too scared to speak, she brought her teddy bear up closer to her face. That's when the stewardess noticed a wristband on the girl. She carefully grabbed the girl's hand and read the name.
"Karla C, nice to meet you sweetie. My name is Clara, and if you need anything I will be right here to help you. Okay?" She rubbed her thumb across the tiny hand and it helped the tiny human calm down. "If you get hungry press this button. If you need to use the potty, press the button. If you get scared, press the button and I'll come sit with you, okay?" Karla looked up at her green eyes and nodded timidly.
With a smile and a head pat, Clara walked away to check on the other passengers. Now that she was alone, Karla clutched her teddy close and shut her eyes. Clara had helped her put on her seatbelt, and Karla was afraid she would get stuck there. It was a very frightening ride for the small child, but luckily Clara did regular check ups on her. She helped her set up a movie, gave her crayons and pages to color, the occasional juice box along with some snacks. It did help Karla not be so afraid, but once they hit turbulence she was in a full blown panic attack. Her breathing was rapid and her eyes wouldn't stop crying, she was quietly sobbing and shaking, desperately trying to seek comfort in her teddy.
Clara's first thought was to check on the girl and she came in at the perfect time. The sight of the girl crying broke her heart, so she was immediately by her side hugging her. Karla recognized Clara and clung to her as the turbulence passed. Karla never knew the comfort of a mother, her parents had passed away when she was born and she was put up for adoption. Unfortunately for her, the couple had tried adopting only as a last resort to try and save their toxic relationship. Her adopted father and mother didn't really care for the girl, they just needed something to keep them together. Just last year they had split, but because of contracts and lawyers they were required to share custody of their adopted daughter. Regardless, they didn't care as they had to money to fly her either to California where her father lived, or back to Miami where her mother lived.
By the time the plane had landed, about six hours later, Karla grabbed her bag that Clara helped her get down and she walked to the exit. She ran up to Clara before exiting and gave her a hug, all the other stewards sadly smiled knowing just how frightened she must've been.
"Goodbye sweetheart, get home safe okay?" Clara was rubbing Karla's back as she reciprocated the hug. "The lady outside will help you find your ride, she also has a surprise for you."
