Run.

That's all she did, not once looking back. She was panting, her lungs were burning from the lack of oxygen. Her legs were just about ready to give up on her. Her worn shoes had seen better days, today would be their last.

She wouldn't stop. She couldn't. If she did then she might as well have died while she was at it.

They were coming, she could here them. They weren't far behind.

Run.

She turned down one dark alley and into the next, and then the next one after that. It happened over and over and over again, until she wasn't sure where she'd ended up. One last turn and she found salvation at the rusted ladder of an old building.

Go!

She climbed. She climbed fast. The ladder shook and groaned under her weight, but she didn't stop. She couldn't afford to.

"Hey!"

She didn't look back at the sound of the man's voice. She didn't startle when they began to climb up after her. She just continued.

"Get back here!", one of them called.

She was getting too slow. They were catching up. They were going to catch her. They were going to kill her.

She paused and looked down. They were too close for her to get away from fast enough, and with nowhere to go she was starting to feel trapped. Heart hammering in her chest, she kept going up. They followed steadily.

"Damn it.", she bit out.

"Just give up now and we'll go easy on ya!"

She didn't want to entertain that thought one bit. She jumped in place to shake the old ladder, an attempt at saving herself even if she'd probably get hurt in the process. The guys began to shout a long string of curses at her, eyeing her with both fear and anger. The ladder shook, and she found herself clutching on as it began to sway in place. Two of the guys fell back to the ground with a loud thud and pained groans. Three of them were still coming for her.

There was nowhere else to go but up. Up was nothing but a trap if they got to her. Down? Down was just the same, if not worse.

So she did the only logical thing in that moment, which was to kick the ladder with her heel. With all the rust it was bound to break. Even if she would probably fall, she didn'tuch care to be in those guys' hands anytime soon.

She took a deep breath, channeling what little energy she had before throwing the first kick. The ladders groaned and shook under the pressure. The guys paused, clearly shaken.

"Hey!"

Two, three, four. One guy tried to move back down, but the one below was dead set on getting the girl no matter the odds. With an angry growl, he shouted, "Dammit! Get her!"

"I— it's giving in, man!"

The girl didn't stop. The ladders let go at the hinges. Five, six, seven, eight. The first guy kept looking down, hoping he could find a way to escape. Shakily, he breathed, "We won't make—"

Down fell the next person. The first guy swallowed, taking in a sharp breath. The others began to climb down as best the ladder would allow.

Ninth kick. Tenth, eleventh, twelfth.
