Thanksgiving Special
June and I currently stood in the kitchen. I smiled to myself as she tried to crack an egg all on her own. "Let me help you." I reached out for the egg, but she quickly pulled away. "No! I can do it." I laughed and watched as she slammed the egg roughly on the counter. It splattered everywhere.
She turned to me and saw the egg all over my face, all she did was giggle. I couldn't help but laugh as well. "You definitely need some help." I walked over to her and gave her another egg. She huffed as I helped her crack the egg, but she didn't complain.
When the egg landed into the pumpkin puree, she jumped up in excitement. "I did it! Mommy I did it." She squealed, and held her arms up as a victory. "Yeah you did! Give me a high five!" I reached my hand out to her, but instead, she flopped over onto me in a giant bear hug.
I caught her in surprise, but returned the hug. I spun her around before placing her down onto the floor.
The doorbell rang through the house. I smiled. "Grandma's here! Why don't you go let her in?" June nodded, excitedly. She hopped up and ran out of the room.
I sighed and walked back over to the start of a pumpkin pie. I mixed the egg in, soon it turned into the same orange color as the pumpkin. I stopped the mixer, as I heard my oven ding. I walked over to it and saw the golden brown turkey.
Normally Colin would help me with the turkey. But this year he had to unexpectedly go to his parents house, to celebrate with them. I understand why his mom is sick, and they don't know how much longer she has. Plus now I get a bunch of mother daughter time.
I pulled the turkey out. It felt like a victory. I had never made a turkey before, most of the meal I made consisted of bland ground beef, or I would make the best desserts you would ever have.
I quickly placed the turkey on the table on the oven, before the heat could go though the hot pads I was wearing. The turkey smelt amazing. I had to give it to myself, the turkey smelt better than the ones Colin had made every year.
I smiled once again, and changed the temperature of the oven to 350 for the pie that would soon be in the oven. I quickly added some vanilla to the pie filling, before I poured it into the pie crust and popped it into the oven.
"Mmm, it smells good." My mom walked into the room holding June. "Thanks, mom." She smiled and placed June down. "How about you help, gam gam with the yams?" June nodded eagerly. I laughed. "Don't let them catch on fire this year." My mom shoed my words away. "It's a tradition."
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, yeah." I grabbed a loaf of stale bread to get started on the stuffing. As I chopped up my bread, I heard my daughter giggling as she placed individual marshmallows onto the sweet potatoes, and lectured my mother about how reckless it is to pour the whole bag onto the yams.
I smiled, and started on the buttery onion, and garlic mix to pour onto the bread. Eventually I was able to bix the mixtures together and place the stuffing in the oven.
I watched as my mother placed the yams into the oven. We walked into the livingroom and turned the TV on for June to watch.
Eventually the many timers I had set rang. I ran into the kitchen, with June and my mother following behind me. I pulled out the pumpkin pie, and stuffing out. I placed them on the table to cool.
I heard my mom gasp, I turned to her. "What?" She didn't answer me, she just continued to look into the oven. I turned to the oven with my eyebrows cocked up. In the few seconds of me taking out my food, and looking back into my oven, my mothers yams had managed to catch on fire.
