November 23-Hell's Kitchen, New York

You had been sitting in front of the mirror for an hour trying to get your makeup right. Nothing you did seemed good enough. It was just Thanksgiving. Why were you trying so hard?

"You almost ready?" Matt asked as he stood in the doorway.

"I can't get this stupid eyeliner right!"

"Just don't wear eyeliner."

"I have to." You sighed. "Everything has to be perfect."

"Why?"

"Because, I want your friends to like me."

"They do like you."

"But what if they don't like the real me. What if they don't think I'm good enough for you?"

"Where's this coming from?"

You sighed and walked over to him.

"I don't really have any family, and Shani is the only friend I have. So when Karen invited us over for Thanksgiving, I saw it as an opportunity to make yours friends our friends."

"Honey, anyone who doesn't automatically like you is an idiot. And even if my friends didn't like you, which isn't true, it wouldn't matter. You know why?"

"Why?"

"Because I like you."

"Where'd you learn to be this suave?"

"College."

You rang the doorbell and stood there for a few minutes until the blonde opened the door.

"Hey, guys!" She smiled and hugged you both. "Thanks so much for coming!"

"Thanks for having us, Karen."

"We brought wine." You said as you handed her the bottle of red.

"Thank you. Come on in. Frank's just finishing the turkey."

"Frank's cooking?" Matt asked. "I knew we should've just went out to a restaurant."

"I heard that, red!" Frank yelled from the kitchen.

"You were supposed to!"

"Boys." She rolled her eyes and laughed. "Tessa, would you mind helping me set the table?"

"Not at all."

You followed her into the dining room and put the plates and silverware around the table.

"Thank you so much for inviting me. I know I'm not exactly in your friend group, so I appreciate it."

"What are you talking about? You're basically family now."

You smiled and talked to her for a while longer.

"So, Matt told me that you guys know?"

"Yeah. I've known for about a year. Foggy a little longer."

"And you weren't mad?"

"Well, I wouldn't say that. But we're all good now."

"How long have you and Frank been together?"

"Just a few months. We've had a long and...complicated relationship."

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang again. Frank let Shani and Foggy in and they all joined you in the dining room.

"Hey!" The girl said as she hugged you and Karen tightly.

"Alright!" Frank exclaimed. "Dinner time!"

"Thank God." You smiled. "I'm starving."

You all sat around the table and piled food onto your plates. Before you could take a bite, you looked over at Matt who was saying a quick prayer to himself. You tried not to make it obvious that you were staring."

"So, tell me if this is corny, but I was thinking that we could just take a minute to say what we're thankful for." Karen said.

"I'll start." Frank surprisingly said. "I'm thankful for three things: beer, food, and you guys."

"You cheesy motherfucker." Foggy laughed.

You were the last person to go. They all looked at you as you thought about your answer.

"Um, I'm thankful for my mom, my health, and this great group of people right here."

"That's so sweet." Shani said. "Although you didn't mention me by name, I will accept it."

Everyone laughed and continued on with the conversation.

After you got back to Matt's place, he was on you from the moment you closed the door. He pressed you against the door and kissed you passionately. His hands found your hips and squeezed them.

"Matt."

"Hm?" He asked, still kissing you.

"Can we talk?"

He pulled away from you and furrowed his brows a little.

"Is everything okay?"

"Yeah. There's just something that's been on my mind. Can we sit?"

He nodded and you both sat on the couch.

"What's going on?"

"Listen, Matt. I know that religion is important to you. I'm glad that you can find comfort in church and God and all that. But, I need you to know that I'm an atheist."

"Okay." He nodded as he took in your words. "I would never try to push my beliefs on you."

"I know. I just didn't want you to be upset by the fact that I don't believe in something that you care about."

"It's okay. Everyone has different beliefs. And that's fine. We don't have to agree on every little thing. It's good that we have different opinions."

"Really?"

"Really."

"What about if I got pregnant?"

"Tessa?"

"I'm not. I'm just asking. What would you wanna do?"

"I don't specifically want kids right now, but I'd want to keep it."

"And I wouldn't. You can't tell me that's not a problem."

"Let's not create problems out of thin air. You're not religious, and I am. That's not enough to keep me away from you."

You rested your head on his shoulder and sighed.

"You're amazing. You're literally perfect."

"Trust me, honey. I'm far from perfect."

"You know what I mean."

"How about we head to bed?"

"And finish what you started earlier?"

"If you insist."
