January 15-Hell's Kitchen, New York
The last thing you wanted was a big funeral. Tons of people coming up to you saying they're so sorry for your loss. Not to mention the fact that you couldn't afford a funeral and a burial. You had her cremated and Shani helped you pick out a nice urn. You didn't want to keep it on display on a mantel or anything, so you put it at the top of the closet.
The past few weeks have been hard, but they would've been a lot harder without Matt. He didn't outright tell you that he thought going back to church would make you feel better, but he definitely hinted at it. But he never pushed you. And you were thankful for that.
"How's that case coming?" You asked into phone.
"Good. Almost done. I should be home in a little less than an hour."
"Good. I'm trying something new for dinner, so don't be late."
"Something new? Does that mean I'm gonna have to have the pizza place on speed dial?"
"Oh, you're funny. Hang up before I hide all your favorite ties."
"Love you."
"Love you."
You hung up and continued making dinner. A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. You wiped your hands and went over to open it.
"Hi. Can I help you?"
"Hello, Tessa."
The man had gray hair and a gray beard. His complexion, eyes, and nose was the same as yours. He was the same. Just a bit older.
"Dad?"
You asked in a faint whisper. All the air had left your lungs and you vision began to blur. You placed your hand on your chest and clung to the doorway.
"Are you okay?" He reached for your shoulder.
"Don't touch me!" You backed away. "Don't you dare fucking touch me!"
"Okay. I'm sorry."
You were steadying your breath when you picked up the smell of smoke. "Shit!" You ran back into the kitchen and turned off the stove before throwing the pot into the sink and spraying it with water. "Fuck!"
"Everything alright?"
"I didn't tell you to come in."
"Tessa, give me a break."
"What are you even doing here? How did you find my address?"
"I heard about your mother. I wanted to reach out to you, so I had spent the past two weeks looking for you."
"Well, you found me. You can go now."
He reached into his pocket and handed you a card. It had a cross on it and a scripture along with an address.
"I'm a Pastor again. I was lost for a long time. But God took me back. He heard my prayers, and he grabbed onto me with his right hand of righteousness."
"You cannot be serious."
"He can help you too. He sees you, Tessa. He sees your trials, your pain, your suffering. he's begging you to come back to him so that he can help you."
"Oh my God. Get out."
"Look, I know I made some mistakes. But, I'm your father, and I care about you."
"You didn't care! You knocked the shit out of me!"
"I did some bad things when I drank, yes. But I do care about you."
