November 5-Hell's Kitchen, New York
You laid next to Matt in bed and waited for him to wake up. You admired everything about him. His eyelashes, the way his nostrils flared as he breathed, how the sunlight rested on his bare chest. He was beautiful, and he was yours. His eyes slowly fluttered open and he could sense you looking at him.
"Good morning."
"Morning." You smiled and kissed him. "How'd you sleep?"
"Better than usual. I always seem to get a full eight hours when I'm with you."
"I have that affect on people."
He caressed your face with his thumb and kissed you softly. You smiled against his lips and pulled him closer.
"How intense is my morning breath for you right now?" You asked.
"It's actually not that bad."
"Thank God."
"Taking the Lord's name in vain?" He teased.
"You gonna punish me for it?"
"Why? Do you want me to?"
"Not that the sexy priest thing doesn't turn me on, because it does, but I'm starving."
"How does pancakes sound?"
"Sounds amazing."
After making a somewhat decent breakfast, the two of you sat at the kitchen table and ate. Since Matt worked in the mornings and you both worked nights, it wasn't often you got time to just sit together.
"I was thinking we could go somewhere today." He said. "Unless you have plans."
"Not until later. Where'd you wanna go?"
"Church."
You almost spat out your coffee from shock.
"Church?"
"I mean, it is Sunday."
"I didn't know you went to church."
"I told you I was catholic."
"Yeah, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you go to church."
"I wear a cross around my neck."
"You also drink, have premarital sex, have 'devil' in your name, and beat the shit out of people every night. So, excuse me for being a little confused."
"I'm not like a crazy religious person, I just usually try to go once a week."
"And that's fine. You're just gonna have to go alone."
"You really don't want to?"
"Maybe next time." You cleaned up our dishes and went to get your stuff.
"Okay. What're you gonna do?"
"Um, I told Shani I'd help her redecorate her apartment."
You were lying. He knew you were lying. And you knew he knew it."
"So, I'll see you..."
"I'll go on patrol with you tonight?"
"Sounds good."
"Okay. I'll see you later." You kissed him and headed to the door.
"Bye."

You got out of your car and opened the doors to the nursing home. After signing in at the front desk, you got in the elevator and went to your mom's room. You hated the smell of nursing homes. They reeked of old people and sadness.
You walked down the hall until you got to the room. She was laying in her bed watching some soap opera you had never heard of. Even though the door was open, you still knocked. She didn't answer, but it felt right to knock regardless. You walked inside and she looked over to you.
"Hello?" She weakly said
"Hi, Mom."
"Who's that?"
"Tessa. Your daughter."
"What day is it?"
"Sunday."
"Sunday?"
"Yup." You smiled and you bent down to hug her. You sat in the chair next to the bed and held her hand. "How are you?"
"Tired"
"I missed you." You smiled. She laid there and looked up at you, not saying a word.
You sat there with her for a while just watching tv. Even though she probably didn't know what was happening. After a while, the nurse came in and brought her lunch. She was kind enough to let you feed her on your own. You sat in silence as she took slow bites of mashed up food.
"I asked the nurse to get you some green jello. Your favorite."
"Contessa." She whispered after a while.
"Mom?"
She went back to taking the bites you gave her and didn't say anything else. You loved your mother. And yeah, you were used to it at this point. But Jesus Christ, dementia was a bitch.
