December 24-Hell's Kitchen, New York

A chill filled the apartment as you rifled through your closet. You had already done your makeup and put your braids in a ponytail while Matt was in the bathroom getting ready. Now you just had to search for a proper outfit. Nothing too tight, short, revealing, or flashy. So, that basically ruled out your whole closet.

Eventually, you found a maroon dress that fell a little past your knees. The only problem was the top of it. There was a little too much cleavage for church. You found a black cardigan and tossed it over the dress. It actually made a decent outfit. You sat on the couch and waited for Matt to come out.

"How do I look?" He asked.

"Amazing."

"Thanks. I'll see you in a few hours?"

"Actually," You interjected as you grabbed your purse and stood up. "Would it be okay if I came with you?"

"You wanna go to Christmas mass?"

"No. But I wanna be with you. And if being with you means that I have to go to church on Christmas and Easter, then I'll do it."

"Tessa, it's okay. You don't have to."

"I'm already dressed, babe. Come on. We don't wanna be late."

You knew this wasn't going to be the funnest thing you've ever done. But you didn't think you'd be this bored. The scriptures sounded foreign to you seeing as you had never stepped foot in a catholic church in your life. But nevertheless, you pushed through it for Matt. Although, you wouldn't be surprised if he heard you snoring a few times.

When it came time to pray, Matt got down on his knees. You followed suit and bowed your head. You had to admit, it felt weird, but also familiar.

After the service, he took you to meet the preist.

"Tessa, this is Father McKinsey. He took over after Father Lantom's passing. Father, this is my girlfriend, Tessa."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Tessa." He shook your hand.

"You as well, Father."

"Will you be coming back to visit us soon?"

"We'll see."

"Well, our doors are always open."

"Thank you."

You led him out to the car and huddled close to him to keep warm.

"So, what did you think?"

"I wasn't as bad as I thought."

"But?"

"Don't expect it to be a regular thing."

"That's okay. Thank you for coming."

This time, Matt woke up before you. He wrapped his arm around you and pulled you back against his chest. The large blanket and your combined body heat could only keep you from the winter chill for so long. Eventually, you woke up and stretched before leaning into his touch.

"Morning." You whispered.

"Morning. I think it's snowing."

You rubbed the sleep out of your eyes and got up to pull back the curtain. He was right. White fluff covered the street. And your car.

"My car."

"We'll stay in all day."

"We better. It's freezing."

"How about I make you some hot chocolate while you find a movie?"

"Can you add some food to that?"

"Of course."

He kissed your cheek and you both went into the living room. You sat on the couch and pulled a throw blanket on top of you while you scrolled through Netflix.

"Do you like Home Alone?"

"It's only my favorite Christmas movie ever."

"Alright. I'll turn on audio description."

The movie played while you drank hot chocolate and ate warm pancakes. Your legs were thrown over Matt's as he circled his thumb on your calves. There was something so peaceful about sitting there and just watching a movie. It was so simple, yet so blissful. But of course, it couldn't last forever.

Your phone rang against the table and pulled you out of your daydream. You picked it up and checked caller ID.

"Who is it?"

"The nursing home." You paused the movie and answered. "Hello?"

"Hi. Is this Contessa Taylor?"

"Yes."

"My name is Laura. I'm was a nurse for your mother."

"What do you mean 'was'?"

"Ms. Taylor, your mother passed in the early hours of the morning. We knew her disease was progressing quicker than normal, but we thought she would at least have a few more months. I'm so sorry."

"What?"

"She's being transferred to the coroner. I know it's Christmas, but there are some papers we need you to sign."

"She's dead?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"They said early spring. It's December."

"That was only an estimate. Your mother's condition progressed very quickly. I'm sorry."

You hung up and set you phone down on the table. Matt grabbed your hand and pulled you closer to him.

"Are you okay?"

"I don't understand. They said early spring, and now she's dead. I don't get it."

"Tessa-"

"I don't think you should give someone hope like that and then it's completely false."

"They had no idea."

"They're doctors. They're supposed to know what they're talking about."

"It's not their fault."

You stood and and went into your room to get dressed. He quickly followed after you and sat on the bed.

"Are you okay?"

"I need to go sign some papers. You can come with or stay here. Whatever you wanna do."

"I'll come with you."

"I have to dig my car out of the snow. Wait here."

"Tessa, talk to me."

"There's nothing to talk about right now. My mom's dead. I knew it was gonna happen. It was just sooner than later."

You put on your boots and grabbed your keys before walking out the door.
