I glanced at Mac. All four of us were on our way back to Denver. Mike was driving his van. Maria sat between us, fast asleep in her car seat. Mac was leaning his head on the window, watching the scenery pass by. The trees and hills reflected in his blue eyes. His hand was resting on the edge of her car seat. I placed my hand on it, smiling at him. He glanced at me.
"Don't worry. We won't say anything about what you've done to me." I murmured. Mac grunted and turned back to the window. "Mac, it'll be fine."
"It ain't what I'm worried about." He muttered.
"What are you worried about?"
"Meetin' yer dad." He mumbled.
"Really?" I asked, kinda surprised. "He isn't that bad. He liked Mike."
"Mike is a fuckin' nerd." Mac stated, then glanced at the front seat. "No offense."
"None taken." Mike muttered
I turned back to Mac. "He'll like you too. Just give him a reason to."
"What if he asks what I do for a living?" Mac demanded. "What will I say? 'Oh, well sir, I used to make meth and rape women.'"
"No, just..." Shit, what should he say? "Lie. Tell him you do what you've always wanted to do."
"Oh, so now I'm the best mechanic in the country an' I build military vehicles?" Mac demanded.
"Ok, how about you're a mechanic? Simple as that." I suggested. "You could pass as a mechanic."
Mac sighed and gave my hand a squeeze. "I'm jus' nervous."
I smiled at him. "Mac, I love you. That's all that matters. Now, I'm not telling you to be an asshole to my dad, but just be polite. And don't smoke."
"I stopped smokin'. Not aloud in prison." He muttered. My eyes widened.
"Well then that's great!" I squealed. I wanted to hug him, but at that moment, Maria decided she hanged attention. She started crying, balling her tiny fists up in frustration. A rank smell floated to me, and I made a face. "Mike, any gas stations nearby? Maria just let off a bomb."
"No. We could pull over and do it in the trunk, though." He stated, already starting to pull over.
Once we came to a complete stop, Mac hopped out of the car. Just as I was about to get out, however, Mac stopped me.
"I got her, babe. You relax."
"Mac, I wanna stretch my legs." I whined. I was getting pins and needles in my ass.
Mac nodded and grabbed Maria from her car seat. I grabbed a blanket, and opened the trunk. While I was setting up the blanket, Mac was trying desperately to stop Maria from crying.
"Shh, it's ok. That stinky diaper will be off soon." I heard him coo.
"Ok, Daddy. It's all set up. Have fun." I stepped back, letting Mac gently rest Maria on the blanket. Mac started undoing her light pink onesie, and stared at her diaper.
"It ain't changing itself, Mac." I pointed out, smiling as I leaned against the car. Mac let out a sigh and glanced at me.
"You sure you don' wanna do it?"
"Hey, you said I could relax." I pointed out, sticking my tongue out at him. Mac shook his head and undid her diaper. As soon as he let go of it, the foul smell raised up, hitting him right in the face. He stuck his tongue out and made gagging noises while I chuckled in the background.
"Hey Angie! C'mere for a second!" Mike shouted. I glanced at Mac.
"Be right back. Don't let her pee on you." I joked, smiling at him. Mac muttered something under his breath, cleaning Maria off. I made my way towards Mike, who was facing the country side. "What's up?"
"Look." He pointed. I followed his finger, to a tree. It was a simple oak, with a hole in it.
"What's so special-"
"Shh. Just watch." He mumbled. I watched and suddenly, three squirrels poked their heads out of the hole. Two bigger ones and one tiny one.
"Aww!" I squealed, feeling like a kid.
"It's like you, Mac, and Maria." Mike pointed out, smiling.
Suddenly, I heard Mac scream. Immediately, Mike and I raced back to the car. Mac was still facing the trunk, his back to us.
"Mac? What happened? Is Maria ok?" I asked, worried.
Mac turned around, a look of disgust on his face. The front of his shirt was a little wet, but Maria looked much happier. She was still on the trunk, diaper free.
"She pissed on me!" Mac exclaimed. I tried to stifle the laughter that was bubbling up. Mac muttered something under his breath. "You can finish changin' her!" He shouted over his shoulder. I rolled my eyes. He'll get over it.
Finally, Maria was changed. But she wouldn't stop crying. Carefully lifting her up, I puckered my lips at her. After trying multiple silly faces, I finally settled with simply rocking her. I rested her head on my shoulder, and swayed my hips back and forth, rocking her. Slowly, her cries ceased, and her head rested fully on my shoulder. I heard her soft snoring in my ear.
"She piss on you?" Mac asked suddenly, making me turn around. He was leaning against the car, watching with a tiny smile on his face.
"No. She just fell asleep on me." I mumbled, careful not to wake her up.
"She's so sweet." Mac murmured, stepping towards us.
"Yeah. She's just like you; a big softy." I stated, smiling up at him. He stepped closer, and placed his hands on my hips.
"She beautiful like her mama." He mumbled, leaning his forehead against mine.
"She has dark hair." I pointed out, glancing at her tiny dark hairs on her head.
"Used to have dark hair. Got lighter when I got older." Mac explained.
"Oh yeah. Kinda hard to forget I'm in love with an old man." I joked, sticking my tongue out.
"But I'm better in bed than anyone else." He stated, giving me that little evil smile.
"With age, comes experience." I declared.
"Speaking of that; you never let me finish." He stated, moving his hands towards my rear.
"Sorry. But I kinda was going into labor." I pointed out, feeling Mac bringing me closer to him. "Mac, I'm holding our daughter. At least wait until a motel." I mumbled. It was getting late.
"Fine. But I'm holdin' you up to it." He growled, before pecking my lips. The small peck turned deeper, until Maria squirmed a little.
"C'mon. It's hot out here, and it's cool in the car." I stated, pulling away. Mac nodded, and helped both of us back onto the car.
