Valerie

»Valerie, don't you want to eat something?«

My sister caught my gaze and threw and asking iris at me.

I arrived the day before in Madrid at my sisters house. She didn't live far away from our parents, which was usually a good thing. But momentarily I was happy that I didn't have to be around them the whole day.
They were already there for me when Charles and I ended things the first time, and I couldn't dare to look them in the eyes for another time and see their sorrow and pity.

They really liked him, especially my mom. But I couldn't explain it to them now.
Not when I wasn't even able to understand or believe it myself.

So there I sat, across Blanca at the table, poking inside my salad. My favorite one.
She made it extra for me that morning.

But I could barely get anything down.

And she noticed of course.

Blanca asked me why I visited her that urgently.
I would always tell her the truth, but this time...

No one knew. Besides Charles and me.
Except if he told anyone. Which I didn't assume.

I gave her the least information so her curiosity would be stuffed. That things between us were complicated at the moment and that I needed some time away from the paddock and its hustle and bustle.

She accepted that of course, and happily welcomed her little sister.

To answer her question,
I shook my head.

»I can't really think about food right now.«

My sister supported her upper body on her forearms which were resting on the table.

»Do you wanna tell me what's going on between you and Charles?«

Normally, she wouldn't even have to ask.
I was always honest with her.

»I don't really want to think about that right now either.«

Liar.
It was all I thought about. Every minute. Every day.

After all, I spoke about not wanting to. Apparently my heart doesn't care about what my head wants.

Blanca nodded.

And we went silent.

When my phone made a sound.

I assumed that I put it on silent. But here we were.

I was scared that Charles contacted me. I couldn't deal with him. Or anyone else close to me right now.

Only sitting across my sister, lying into her face made me want to throw up.

So with apprehension, I picked up my phone that was laying on the table.

My eyebrows rose as I opened the message.

It was from work.

I was Charles' social media manager at the moment, but I still took part in the design team.

»From whom is it?«, Blanca asked curiously.

»The Ferrari design team contacted me. They saw my F1- logo modell and requested that I do a modell of my presented car livery!«, I filled her in while flying over the mail.

»They want to exhibit it at the paddock and on the next Ferrari design gala!«

Blanca applauded quietly.

»That's great news! So happy for you sis!«

And for the first time in a few days, a spark wandered across my face.
