Izzy had stayed and was crying over Max, begging him to wake up when Sebastian entered, trying to convince Izzy to take a break and take care of herself as he watched Max.
Just as Izzy had agreed, Robert and Maryse burst into the room.
"Mom! Dad!" Izzy exclaimed as she hugged them both and Serena gave them a smile as Maryse moved over to give her a quick hug, before even accepting one from Robert.
"Are you ok?" he asked her, but Izzy answered for her.
"She can't talk. She uh, fought Jonathan by herself to save Jace, Clary and the Mortal Mirror. It seems like that demon bastard can't stand the sound of an angel singing. Her voice is just sore from the amount of power it took to subdue Jonathan. She was also thrown against a tree, but she'll be fine," Izzy assured them and they seemed to relax a little but tension still stiffened their bodies.
"Your father and I spoke with Brother Enoch," Maryse began as she looked down at her unconscious son. "He says warlock magic can't heal Max."
"Our only hope is to allow the Silent brothers to attempt a procedure that they only use in rare emergencies," Robert informed.
"Kind of like rebooting the brain," Maryse simplified.
Reading the look on her parabatai's face, Izzy asked, "Does it involve any risks?"
"I'm afraid so. Very few Shadowhunters have survived it," Robert said.
"You still think we should do it?" Izzy asked.
"If we don't, Max will never wake up," Maryse replied.
"I'll be praying for your son," Sebastian said, but Serena didn't like the way he almost swaggered out of the room.
She then pulled out her stele, writing a message that appeared in Izzy's hands. She could only hope her plan worked.

Magnus had tried and failed to heal Max, which meant that their only hope in all of this lay in the procedure that Brother Enoch would perform. The procedure that he might not survive. But while they had no control over that, what they did have control over was finding Jonathan.
Serena had remembered something that her brother had told her. In his journals, Jace had read that Jonathan couldn't tolerate the touch of electrum. He'd scream when it touched his skin and burned down to the bone. Serena had thought it was funny that her sister now favoured a weapon that was made from electrum. So, her message had Clary extracting a piece from Izzy's whip and they were testing everyone.
Sebastian wasn't Sebastian. He was Valentine's son, Clary's brother. He was the one who threw Serena into a tree. And he was the one who tried to kill Max. He was Jonathan. After tricking Jace away from the Mirror, he'd killed all the guards before taking it. He almost escaped too. He held the electrum without screaming, without flinching before handing it back to Clary and she saw the blood on it.
She'd wounded him and managed to retrieve the Mirror but Jonathan still got away.
He had escaped without his prize, and he'd never get his hands on it again. Neither would anyone.
Because when Clary used her deactivation rune to nullify the Mirror's powers, it turned into ash.
Meanwhile, Serena hadn't let go of Max's hand the entire procedure, her bed still next to his as Brother Enoch worked to save him. Now it was just waiting to see if he woke up.
Serena herself had been finally discharged from the infirmary and was told no singing whatsoever for a couple of days, but other than that she was ok. She was still holding Max's hand as their entire family gathered around his bed and his eyes fluttered open.
