Jace had narrowly escaped death by Serena when he, Izzy, and Clary had been able to capture a possessed mundane before they were able to kill a person they loved. They had, however, lost the Owl demon. What they had discovered though was that the owl wasn't Jonathan as Jace had originally thought. He believed his dreams of seeing Clary die and Jonathan be there were prophetic the way Clary's had been about the Mortal Mirror. He was proved wrong when Izzy got the Owl with her electrum whip and it didn't react. They were back to square one in that regard.
They had locked the possessed girl, Morgan, in an Institute cell. She kept clawing the walls and calling for Sarah, the loved one she wished to kill. She was the 11th mundane to be possessed and they were still no closer to finding the Owl.
"Hey, any luck?" Serena asked as she stood in the lab in front of a microscope as Izzy and Alec walked in.
"Nothing," Izzy huffed.
"There's no getting her to break through the possession," Alec added.
"She keeps asking for Sarah who is her twin sister and it fits the MO of the previous possession victims," Izzy continued.
"How about you? You got anything?" Alec wondered and Serena nodded to the microscope as she pulled off her latex gloves.
"Have a look."
Alec was the first to peer into the magnifying device. "Demon cells. So what?" he asked as he moved away to let Izzy peak in.
"Not demon cells. Those are Morgan's cells," Serena corrected and Izzy gaped as she looked into the microscope.
"They've been completely transformed. I can't see any mundane cells in this sample."
"That's because there aren't. Whatever the Owl had done to her, it transformed her entire body. She's no longer mundane. She's demonic," Serena told them gravely.
"So there's no saving her?" Alec sighed.
"No. There's no way to reverse a demonic transformation like that," Izzy answered.
"I wouldn't be so sure," Serena piped up.
"What are you thinking?" Izzy questioned as they watched Serena move the slide sample from under the microscope onto the bench.
"Well," she began as she pushed her hair over her shoulder, "if my voice could help undo the demonic corruption of the ley lines, maybe it can help undo this."
"Wait, Serena, are you sure about this?" Alec asked worriedly.
"Yeah, I mean, you're here, aren't you? You've got me covered, don't you?" she asked with a smirk.
Alec couldn't help but smile. "Always."
"Then I see no harm in trying out this little experiment," she said after she pecked his lips.
"Please be careful, S," Izzy said and Serena nodded at her before she turned towards the bench and the sample on top of it.
She took a great breath before she started singing, her angelic voice washing over it before something strange happened. Her body seemed to jolt before she began to sing louder almost as if the sample was fighting back against her.
"Serena," Alec said sceptically as she seemed to sing louder. It wasn't long after that, that her singing ceased as a flash of white light blinded the room. "Serena!" Alec called, his body moving before he could process it as he caught her.
