*DONOVAN'S POINT OF VIEW*
Lex drives like a madman, the music is up and blasting at a comfortable level. My back is pressed up against the leather seat and I feel a mountain of boulders fall into the pit of my stomach. In the mirror I spot a dust cloud that isn't ours. Actually it's more like three or four.
"Shite" Lex whispers and bites her lower lip in frustration. I don't have time to think; everything has been happening so fast and I have a feeling that everything's about to change. Worlds collide and hearts get broken. A full tank of gas but the engine is most definitely going to go out soon. The cars behind us are flat out badass; muscle cars with huge mustang engines and incredible modified fuel efficiency. The passengers wear dark masks over their faces and are dressed in camouflage. They are obviously not rebels on our side, but working for Nines, the last president of the U.S.. Suddenly Lex slams on the gas and takes us up to 130 miles per hour. The cars behind us easily and almost casually match our speed. We still have the advantage of being small and ahead by 30 seconds.
"We can't outrun them" Lex says angrily, "we have to fight our way out of this one."
I nod and grab several guns from the back seat. Lex puts her window down, and pulls a bandana up over her nose and a pair of old aviator goggles down over her eyes. I open the hatch and slide into the back seat.
"Do we want their cars?" I question to her, and she looks at the dashboard. The engine light has gone on again, and the oil light, and the engine cool system, as well as the Emissions Control. She nods once and I pull out the sniper rifle.
"For the lead bird drift left" I tell her and she immediately does so. I fire one shot and kill the driver in the first car. Tilt the barrel slightly to the right and then fire again, taking out the passenger who was trying to drive the car from the passenger seat. The cars behind the first one open fire and I duck down, letting Lex weave and dodge the bullets but it doesn't do much good. The car still takes hits and two of the tail lights go out. I take aim again and just give up on saving the cars. Pulling out an automatic rifle I go through three clips and manage to cause three of the six cars to explode. I hear Lex groan behind me with frustration. I sigh and pull out my pistol. Taking aim I just aim for the drivers and passengers. The three cars open fire again and again. For three rounds I dodge bullets and in one lucky miss one grazes my cheek and ear. Sadly the car is about to give out. Wheezing it's last few breaths Lex floors it.
We manage to get a few good hundred yards away before the engine begins to smoke. Lex puts it on cruise control and puts an empty shot gun to keep the wheel from turning. She climbs in the back with me and pulls out the Bazooka. Deftly she loads it and takes aim at the center car. She slowly breathes in and slowly exhales. She waits for a calm part in the song to fire.
"Hail to the king" she mutters as she pulls the trigger and manages to lodge the middle in the grate on the front of the car. With my pistol I take aim and shoot the missile. It explodes and the car goes with it. The heat of the explosion fries the drivers and passengers in the other two cars which are miraculously saved from the fire. I clamber back into the front seat, adrenaline still pumping through my veins and remove cruise control and stop the car.
Suddenly something starts ticking and Lex goes pale. Grabbing the guns and our bags from the back seat she wordlessly leaps from the car and sprints. Her combat boots easily grip the dusty pavement. I follow suit and it hits me. Literally. I use my body to protect this beautiful girl from the self destruct mechanism in the car. The heat from the explosion rages against my back, protected only by the leather jacket I wear and my jeans. Lex huddles against herself with her legs up to her chest and her hands over her neck. I feel pieces of car raining down upon us. Ash chokes my lungs, stealing the oxygen from my body.
"Are you okay?" I ask her, she just nods and breathes heavily for several minutes. I can tell something is up. She's acting different but it is probably just adrenaline.
Lex gets up and pulls me to my feet. We run the thirty yards to the cars that pursued us. Six total, and three seem to be useable. Lex grits her teeth and tugs open the driver side door. She takes a deep breath and looks at me. Her eyes are full of disgust and concern. She shrugs it off and again grits her teeth to pull the dead and burned body from the car. I rush to help her pull the second one out and I go to leave them on the side of the road.
"We can't just leave them here" Lex says quietly. She has a gash on her shoulder and several cuts on her sides but she seems to be okay.
"Why not? They were going to do the same thing to us." I say indignantly. Her eyes darken and narrow with anger and frustration. Her fists clench and she tries desperately not to cry. I move toward her to comfort her but she moves away, her fragile body shakes worse than a leaf in a hurricane wind.
"Before your life is over, know this to be true. All the hate we hold inside still won't save our youth" Lex says slowly, her voice is melodic and beautiful. The message is clear, don't hate. I nod and sigh.
"What are we doing with them then?" I ask her gravely. She shrugs and walks away.
Women. Leave all the work for the men. Typical.
When she returns she has a red flag and two gallons of gasoline. She draws a large circle in the sand off the road and motions for me to bring the bodies. I do so. All six of them. She then says a mumbled something and then lays the red flag over them and sprinkles them in gasoline. Then she has me take the canisters and she lights a cigarette and tosses it onto the dead who catch fire. Down the road I see two more fires from behind us. Lex moves toward one of the useable cars and opens the hood. I move toward another and do the same. We inspect all of the cars and move the totaled ones out of the road. After all is said and done we have two useable cars with full tanks of gas. Lex has her stuff. I have mine. We get into separate monsters and race off into the sunset.Author's Note
Yay! Inspiration! I owe this one to Donovan himself, I base all my characters off of real people and discuss the book with them. So he gave me the idea of something from a different point of view and a gunfight to get the ball rolling. And I need help now lol I have no idea how to go about the war and killing off characters, bringing back other characters and adding effects. I'm open for anything. Suggestions and whatnot are always welcome. Thanks
