~YAEL~

Months passed. She continued to heal, and her legs were almost fully functional again. Her body was in her prime again, but her heart remained in the past. She thought often about that fight, and she was aware he could hear her thinking about it, but he never spoke a word to her about any of it. That hurt her even more. But what could she do? She didn't want to bring up a topic again that he would only give unsatisfactory answers to.

"How are you feeling?" Duncan asked her after they had dinner.

"Good," she said. But she wasn't sure about that.

"Can I do anything for you?"

She pulled on her sleeves. "I cooped up here. Can we go outside?"

"Where?"

"I don't know," she replied.

She watched him think for a while before he spoke again. "Do you want to go to the lighthouse? I can let you in."

"Okay," she said.

"Let's go, then."

She got up from the bed and they prepared to go out. When they stepped out, she hooked her arm around his and he held onto her waist, pulling her body next to his. They walked in the silent night, and she could hear soft crickets all around her. She looked everywhere and saw dim street lights surrounding her. They burned beautifully, and she felt peace.

"Will we go my country soon?" Yael asked.

"Yes, next month."

That was after Maya's death anniversary. He was hell bent on visiting her grave and she knew she wouldn't be able to convince him otherwise. Sure, he would move with her to her country, but nothing would stop him from making the trip back every year on her death anniversary to visit her grave.

She bit her tears back. She knew she was sounding like a stupid kid right now, but she couldn't help but feel sad. When she was growing up, she used to be the sole attention of her parents, but her younger siblings came along, and she lost the love of her parents. She grew up with abandonment issues, and it was only exacerbated when she had several failed friendships in school. She hated feeling this way, but life had taught her she would be no one's first choice.

"It's just up that road," Duncan said.

Yael walked, still deep in her thoughts. She was about to voice them when she caught two men loitering near the shore. She squinted at them and saw that they were glaring at her.

Her blood chilled. Those eyes, she knew eyes like that. They were filled with hate. They looked as if they wanted to wipe her off the face of the earth. Fear crept into her mind and Duncan's hold on her tightened as they picked up pace. Soon, they were well on their way to the lighthouse, and she could no longer see the shady figures.

"Here we are," Duncan said, opening the door for her. She ascended the stairs with him and finally, it opened up to the control room where he worked at.

She took the entire place in and imagined him hard at work. Musing again, she felt his presence approaching her back, and she closed her eyes when he took her hair from the side of her neck away to kiss her there.
