Before Nova was Nova, she was Sam.
And Sam thought that her powers were a gift.
She and Naiomi would play with the mini firework shows that Sam would display, laser their names into trees, and once, eliminated the darkness of night in their neighborhood for a whole week.
Scientists and news stations from around the country came to visit her neighborhood to see the phenomenon, unable to explain what was causing it. Sam would giggle with Naiomi as they watched the dumbfounded researchers.
She didn't know she had just attracted the very organization that would turn her world upside down... HYDRA.
It was 3am and perfectly sunny outside of Sam's house. Most of the neighborhood just kept their blinds closed and draped the windows with a blanket or two to block out the light as they slept.
The HYDRA agents quietly climbed up a palm tree to the girl's window before kicking it, the impact shattering the window on the first try.
She was a heavy sleeper, so she didn't wake up.
The HYDRA agent looked around the room: cyan walls, purple bedcovers, a fan shaped as a flower with pastel colors painted on it, and a bookshelf that nearly took up the space of an entire wall to top it off.
He walked over to the girl, motioning for his partner to approach as well.
He leaned over, whispering into the other man's ear, "Kill the rest."
The other man nodded and headed to the next bedroom, where Vicky and Smith slept. He shot them in the head. He walked to the rest of the rooms in the house, shooting each and every last person.
It was the scream of her mother that woke Sam. But by then, the first HYDRA agent had already placed glowing handcuffs on her, and a gun to her temple.
"Where's my mom?" She cried. "Who are you? Get your filthy hands off of me!" She exclaimed, trying to squirm out of the man's grip.
"My name is Agent Keller, and you better listen up," he threatened in his low voice, "You make a noise, I will kill you. If you make another movement, I will kill you. Listen to my every order, and you live, understood?"
Tears ran down her cheeks. "But my fam-"
"They're all dead anyways," he interrupted.
That was the moment Sam was no longer Sam.
Before Nova was Nova, she was #58 of HYDRA's superhuman test subject facility.
The first day she spent there was terrifying.
They threw her into a dark and cold room with a metal table.
It must have been purposefully magnetic, since once they placed her handcuffed wrists on the table, she couldn't pull them off, no matter how hard she tried.
She spent an hour or two bent over that table, unable to sit or get in a more comfortable position.
Agent Keller walked in the room at last, his boots echoing in the small room.
"Why am I here?" She asked in a small voice, a few tears escaping the child's eyes.
He walked up to her, knelt down and lifted her chin to get a better view of her.
