Rikki Gilbert always knew what she would become as an adult.
"Get out of the away! Let us pass!"
She would become a doctor.
"The airways are blocked!"
Ever since she was a little girl, the idea of being able to save people had always fascinated her.
"There's no pulse! Get ready with the defibrillator!"
And being able to operate on a patient in the operating room?
If someone asked her, she would say that performing surgery was the most spectacular thing a human could do (she felt bad for every patient lying on the table in the OR too, but it was a secondary feeling).
"Clear!"
Of course, she could never have imagined that, sooner or later, she would be laying on that same table. It was probably karma who was playing a joke on her for all the times she had misbehaved.
"Charge to 300!"
No sane doctor could ever get bored from performing surgeries. Infact, every surgeon studied for years to finally get able to be in that OR and to save lives. And, most of the time, they succeeded in doing so. But what if, that time, no one was able to save her?
"Time of death..."
In reality, she didn't even know how she get in that situation. Had there been an accident? She didn't remember. But she was 100% sure of one thing: she should never have set foot in that hospital.
A FEW YEARS AGO...
People running, pagers that didn't stop beeping, doctors screaming with the top of their lungs, busy saving the lives of as many people as possible.
That was what Rikki aspired to be. A real doctor. With real patients. Not having to dissect frogs or to practice on deceased bodies anymore.
She smiled as she walked through the empty operating room, surrounded by people her age that, just like her, had the same desire as her.
Desire that was pretty visible by the sparkle in their eyes, which examined the room with attention.
They all shared the same insane need to do something, to not just stay with hands in hand, being able to save lives.
