I went back as soon as they told us we could. Because she was still in intensive care, only a few of us were allowed back there at a time. Mrs Carson had come back with me but she couldn't stay. She had a melt down as soon as she saw Serenity. I sit in the chair beside her bed, Addison was in there with me at the moment. My thick hand stroked her forehead softly. She was asleep right now, and the doctor said it was the best thing for her.
"I saw you and your dad talking," Addison says
"He knows about us," I tell her
"What do we do know?"
I smile. "I could mark both of you." I tell her the idea had been buzzing around my head since I saw them the morning of my birthday.
"That's a nice thought, but have you forgotten Serenity hasn't gotten her wolf yet?"
"No, are you willing to wait that long?" I ask my eyes on Serenity
Addison pushes off the windowsill she been leaning against "Yes" she says she pulls a strin of Serenity's black hair off her face. "I'd do anything for her."
It's funny because I would do anything for either one of them. Addison moves around to me. I pull her down into my lap. So that we were all together, all touching.
"I might go get some coffee," she tells me
" Ok, don't stay gone too long,"
She smiles. "Someone else might want to come in and visit."
She turns to me, and I kiss her lips slowly. "I'll give you a couple of moments, but that's it,"
"Ok," she whispers, kissing me again, she stands, her fingers brushing my shoulder as she goes.
For a while after Addison leaves, it's quite in there. My eyes dance over Serenity's broken body. I wanted to kill her brothers for what they had done to her. I didn't understand what would make them do this this her.
I quickly stand as a gasp leaves Serenity's lips "Zac" she whispers my name it's the most beautiful thing I ever heard.
"I'm here, baby," I tell her, leaning down so she could see me. Tears flooded her beautiful eyes. "No, don't do that," I tell her
She looked away from me, her face still swollen and her eye black. But she was still one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, "it hurts."
"Shh," I tell her, "rest for now."
"Zac," she says again
"It's alright, baby," I tell her
"It hurts," she says
"Do you need the doctor?" I ask
I start to turn, and she grabs my arm. I look down at her "Please" she says
"Ok baby I got to go to the door to get help" I tell her She releases her grip and I rush to the door a nurse passes by and I stop her "Get doctor Monroe" I tell her
"What seems to be the problem?" the nurse asked
"Just get doctor Monroe now," I demand
"Yes, sir," she rushes off
I turn back to Serenity "Zac," she calls to me again. "It hurts."
"Ok baby, they are getting the doctor," I tell her
"What happened?" Addison asked from the doorway
"She woke up. She's in a lot of pain," I tell her
"Move," I hear doctor Monroe tell Addison, and it strikes a nerve. I let it slide because I know he's trying to get in to take care of Serenity. "What's going on?"
"It hurts," Serenity says
"Where are you hurting, Serenity?" the doctor asked
She doesn't answer she passes back out. "Is she alright?" I ask
"Yes," he says, taking a syringe out of his pocket I watch as he injects it into her IV. "She's probably just hurting from all the beating she got."
"What you just give her," I ask
"Pian medicine, it should help ease it up. And maybe when she wakes again, she won't be hurting as bad. "
I nod. "Thank you,"
"She might sleep for the rest of the night now,"
I nod. He leaves us once again. "You alright?" I ask Addison
She smiles. "Yeah," she says, coming to sit on the edge of the bed beside me. "I got you a coffee."
"Thanks." I tell her, taking the small cup from her. I take a sip of the bitter drink
"Your dad's still out in the waiting room," she tells me. "He said he was just waiting to hear what the doctor said. Mrs Carson has gone to see the twins again." She tells me,"I can't imagine how she feels, "
"I knew her husband," I tell her. "He was a good man, one of dad's soldiers. He died in battle. This whole thing doesn't make sense. "
"Jealousy makes people do stupid things."
"Do you think that's what it was?"
"What else could it have been?"
"Serenity was always her father's favorite," Mrs Carson says from the doorway
"I'll go let you visit," Addison says
"No, please stay, I'm not going to be long," she tells us
I stand taking Addisons hand. we move to the other side of the bed so Mrs Carson could get to her daughter.
"Ed lift her everything when he passed away. She doesn't even know it yet, I have control over it until she truns eighteen, " Mrs Carson says
"He was a generous man," I say
"That he was, the twins, however, will not be getting a dime of it," she says
"If you don't mind me asking why not," Addison asked
She smiles as she looks down at Serenity, and I see a single tear slip down her cheek. "It wasn't always easy when Ed and I first started out," she says, her voice shaking and low. "I made some mistakes I'm not so proud of."
"The twins wasn't his," I ask
She shakes her head, another tear slips down her cheek, and she whips at it. "I should be going, goodnight," she says
"Goodnight, Mrs Carson," Addison says. Then, as soon as she is out the door, "poor Serenity"
"We all make mistakes," I tell her
"What was yours?" she asked me
"I should have waited until y'all were older," I tell her, looking down at Serenity
"I don't think we could have waited that long," she whispers
Taking a seat beside the bed, I pull Addison down into my lap once again, taking Serenity's hand in mine. The knock on the door frame doesn't even fase me. Addison shifts to move, and I only tighten my grip around her. My eyes are going to my dad.
"Everone, alright," he asked
"She woke up earlier," I tell him. "Was in a lot of pain,"
"You two should be getting home," he tells us
"I'm fine where I am," I tell him my eyes go back to Serenity
"She's going to be fine, son," he says
"And I'm going be here when she wakes up again," I tell him
"Addison," he says
Her head has been down this whole time. "With all due respect, sir, I know my place," she tells him
I see the corners of his mouth twitch "I'll let your mother know then" he says "at least try to get some sleep" he says nodding to both of us he leaves us for the remainder of the night.
When Addison falls asleep in my lap, I place her over on the couch so she can be comfortable. My head lays on the bed. Serenity lays on.
