Maxie smirks and throws out his first pokemon. The same Mightyena from before appeared and howled at me. I growl back at it and release Gallade from his pokeball.

"You again!?" Mightyena exclaims. Gallade smiles evilly and chuckles.

"What? I thought you wanted to see me," he says, raising an eyebrow at the trembling Mightyena. Mightyena growls and steps back. Maxie narrows his eyes at his pokemon, but continues anyways.

"Mightyena, use Assurance," he commands it. Mightyena sprints forwards, its paw glowing purple.

"Dodge it," I say calmly. Gallade slides to the left and evades the attack. I notice May and Drew out of the corner of my eye. I feel so bad for not telling her, but I had no choice. Wait a moment... I glance back at the couple. Where's Paul? He was here a minute ago. I shake my head and turn back to the battle.

"Use Close Combat," I counter. Gallade nods and rushes towards the Mightyena, the blades on his arms extending. Mightyena gives out a yelp and tries to dodge, but gets snagged by the attack. Gallade delivers a series of lightning-fast punches before throwing the poor pokemon against a nearby rock wall. Maxie frowns and waves his hand.

"Use Roar," he says. Dang it, Maxie!!! I clench my fists as Mightyena gets up and lets out a ferocious roar, sending Gallade back to his ball. Another one of my balls opens and my own Mightyena pops out. She growls fiercely and glares at Maxie's Mightyena. Maxie smirks and adjusts his glasses.

"Looks like we're both at a disadvantage," He notes, laughing at the coincidence. I roll my eyes and cross my arms.

"Thanks for pointing out the obvious," I retort, scowling across the field at him. He annoys me so much sometimes. He frowns and points at my Mightyena.

"Use Take Down," He commands. His Mightyena sprints forwards, aiming at my pokemon. I come up with a quick plan and put it into action.

"Use Take Down, but use it to escape from it," I tell her. She nods and takes off in the opposite direction. I watch the chase and wait until my Mightyena swerves near a rock.

"Okay, now swerve around and grab his tail using Crunch!" I call out to her. She makes a sharp right and flies past Maxie's Mightyena. Before it has a chance to register what had just happened, she grabs its tail and uses her strength to swing it in a circle. Mightyena howls in pain and widens its eyes when my Mightyena lets go of its tail. It goes soaring through the air before crashing into a nearby rock. I cover my face as a cloud of dust spurts into the air. I wait for a few moments for the dust to disappear and glance at the rubble. Maxie's Mightyena lies unconscious on the ground. Maxie scowls and returns the pokemon, bringing out another ball.

"Let's make this quick," he says, tossing out his new pokemon. A Crobat appears and screeches at us in warning. Mightyena whimpers and paws at her ears in pain.

"I hate that sound," she says, crouching lower towards the ground. Maxie smirks at me and turns his attention to his Crobat.

"Use Haze. After that you know what to do," He commands it. The Crobat flies to the center of the field and soon a thick cloud smothers the battlefield. I narrow my eyes and try to see through the fog. Chatot lifts off my shoulder and flies up to a higher perch in the cave. He looks down at me and shakes his head. He can't see anything either. I grit my teeth and turn back to the fog.

"Be prepared, Mightyena!" I shout through the fog. I'm greeted by a yelp of pain. The smoke glows purple for a few seconds before changing back to white, and repeating again. A series of sharp howls echo through the fog and I close my eyes, turning my head to the ground. I hear May gasp behind me, but I pay no attention to it. The smoke finally thins out and I choke back a cry when I see Mightyena lying on the ground. I return her silently and thank her before pulling out my next pokemon.
