It was getting a bit chilly because the sun was setting but there was still little sunlight, Haerin looked over to the streetlights, lighting up, a clear sign that she had to get home quickly. Not like it was dangerous or anything, Haerin's neighborhood was well-guarded and her neighbors were nothing but friendly. She just had a not-so-strict curfew.
Something she was willing to break for the girl wearing her favorite jacket, Danielle June Marsh. They were walking home together after hanging out with their friend group at Minji's place because their houses were only 2 buildings away from each other.
Haerin watches as the wavy-haired girl looks up to the sky, smiling at the view of the orange sun. Her slightly tanned skin and naturally brown hair looked ethereal under the sun and Haerin would've thought she was dreaming if it wasn't for Danielle lightly squeezing her hand (which was intertwined with hers) from time to time.
When Danielle turns to face her, Haerin almost forgets how to breathe but she's not complaining, not when the taller girl was smiling so fondly at her.
Their eyes meet.
As cliché, as this may sound, Haerin could go on forever talking about Danielle's eyes and not get tired. One of the many quotes that deeply resonates with how she feels about them is, "Her eyes are like endless pools I would willingly drown in without a care for air" but she can't seem to remember where she got it from.
Being too quiet has never been a problem for them because their silence has never been awkward or deafening, instead, it was comfortable. Danielle does most of the talking and Haerin always responds in her way, be it a hum, a nod, a frown, or a smile, Danielle appreciates them all but sometimes Haerin doesn't respond at all.
It's not because she's not interested in what she was saying (how could she be?), it's because she got lost in her eyes and the way they sparkle, she loses all touch with reality and dives into a bigger world, a world so beautiful she'd never want to leave even if it could kill her.
The sun had fully set when they arrived at Haerin's house, it was finally time for them to part ways, "You wanna keep that for tonight?" Haerin referred to the green jacket she gave Danielle around 15 minutes ago.
"Can I?" Danielle asked hopingly, making Haerin's heart flutter. She knows she should be embarrassed at how weak she was for the Australian girl- or at least that's what she was told to feel, but she wasn't, not even a single bit. Haerin believes that if it's Danielle, she has no reason to be. Danielle has taught her that it's perfectly fine to love and to be loved and Haerin will forever be grateful for her.
Haerin pulled up the jacket that was on the verge of sliding off Danielle's shoulders to help her put it on properly, "Yes, you can," she fixed up Danielle's hair, making sure it won't get tangled in the zipper, "My favorite jacket for my favorite person," she cupped her cheek and start caressing it with her thumb as Danielle leans into the touch.
The wavy-haired girl let out a chuckle, "Thank you," she placed her hand over Haerin's hand on her cheek. The lighting from the houses and streetlights made the scene look like it was straight out of a romance movie, highlighting Danielle's lashes as she fluttered them shut. Haerin didn't have to think twice about what her girlfriend wanted, she leaned forward, their lips almost touching.
However, just as the world around them seemed to fade away, a click was heard. It was the sound of the front door unlocking. Haerin quickly pulled away from Danielle to a much more friendlier and socially acceptable distance in shock. Luckily, the gates were still closed so whoever opened it didn't see them. "Sorry," Haerin apologized frantically and held Danielle's hand as she realized she had just pushed the girl of her dreams away, regretting her choice of actions.
