Chapter 3- Boys don't cry

Y/N's POV:
"Hey Ellie I'm sorry you know I'm sorry right." I said desperately to her. "Why'd you do it? Huh." She questioned. "Let's be friends we have a whole year ahead." I pleaded. "Oh you wanna be friends?" She questioned and leaned closer to me our faces are so close right now. "Yeah I wanna be friends." I said confidently. Her face was so close to mine I could smell her scent. She smelt of pine, forest and a bit of rain. She brought her hand up to a strand of my hair and said "So then let's be friends." Her voice was so husky and deep it made me flustered.
I woke up in a sweat and my breathing was so heavy. Gosh what the actual hell was that, what a nightmare. I reached for my phone to check the time. 6:30 am my phone read. Gosh I might as well get ready. I brushed my teeth, took a shower, washed my hair and did skin care. I remember Maria telling me I don't have to dress so formal because we wore aprons over our outfits. I put on a pair of green cargo pants and my favourite shirt. I managed to pack lunch and I searched around for my mother to greet her but she was no where to be found. A piece of paper was stuck to the fridge with a fridge magnet.
Dear Y/N,
I'm working an extra job at night but I promise I will call you later. Have a wonderful day

I felt bad for my mother, because she was doing this to make ends meet. To make my ends meet. I took a piece of paper and wrote back to her on the fridge.

Dear mum,
Thank you for working hard. I got the job so you don't have to work as much.

Y/N
I knew she wouldn't see it until I was home but it didn't matter as long as she saw. I walked to work and it was only 7:30 am. Gosh no one was in yet so I stood around and waited. Around five minutes later I was greeted by Maria who opened the door for me. Ellie was with Maria as well but we didn't greet we simply just ignored each other. Seeing Ellie made me remember that weird dream from last night and I cringed to myself at the thought of her and I acting like that. "Your apron." Ellie huffed and threw an apron on the counter for me. "Thanks." I muttered. I tied the apron around my waist. It was black and had the Café's logo in the middle and it looked sort of cute. Ellie and I cleaned up in silence on opposite ends of the café. Lev came rushing in and jumped up and down when he saw that the clocked had reached 8am "On time." He huffed out of breath. "Hey Lev." I said with a wave. "Ready for some more training?" He asked and made eyes at Ellie. "Hi Lev." Ellie said she didn't sound annoyed but she didn't sound exactly happy. "Hi Ellie, Abby is coming in for extra help today at around 10 am." He told her and she just nodded. Her hair fell in front of her face from her half up do whilst she wiped tables she looked so focused for once her face was not that unbearable to look at. "Customers are going to start coming in so let's get to work." Lev said and with that he was off to the kitchen which left Ellie and I alone with the deathly tension. We just did what we were supposed to do and somehow managed to avoid each other. A customer came in and this was going to be my first order alone without any help. I felt a bit nervous but I knew I could do it. A tall man who looked around his forties with black thinning hair in a suit approached me. "Hello good day, how can I help you on this fine morning?" I said enthusiastically. I saw Ellie glaring probably at me to make sure I was doing this properly. "Can I get a regular sized cappuccino to go." He said. "Sure and your name is?" I asked. "Andrew." He said and licked his lips. Ew was all I could think as I wrote it down on a regular sized cup. "Are you new?" He asked. "Yes." I said with a big fat fake smile. "Well you're pretty cute when's your lunch break?" He asked staring directly at my chest area. Ellie approached "Go make his drink." Was all she said. Her voice sounded like she could kill jeez she really hates me. I could see her saying something to the man and his facial expression dropped and he looked extremely pissed off. Did Ellie Williams just defend me? I made the guy named Andrew his drink and Ellie stopped me before I could give it to him. "Don't entertain creeps, I'll get Maria." She said and went to get Maria. I didn't really want to cause a commotion, because stuff like this happens a lot to people and no one really does anything about it. But I guess it doesn't make it right. Maria came out of her office looking like someone had just ruined her day. I was in shock Ellie did this for me, but I knew better than to think she'd do anything for me. Maria started talking to this Andrew guy really calmly until things started to get heated. "I told you, you are not allowed here and you're lucky I wasn't the one to see your first or Ellie didn't do what she did last time. Get out and don't come back you're banned." She shouted. Other customers stared at Maria like she was a crazy lady but I felt grateful that she defended me. I couldn't help, but wonder what did Ellie do last time. "Gosh I'm so sorry about that creep. Some things happened with him a couple months ago and who would have thought he'd show up again. Luckily Ellie realised who he is. Not that she'd forget." Maria apologised and walked back to her office muttering curse words to herself. Other than the creep the morning went quick and well. The customers seemed to like me and I was glad that I was doing well. Ellie still death glared me from time to time and scoffed if a girl complimented me. Soon enough it was lunch break which was at 10 am for me. I joined Lev in the kitchen who was super overjoyed to see me. "Y/N!" Lev shouted as he saw me. "Lev!" I said back with the same energy. "I think you can have an extended lunch break, because my sister is coming in soon." He said with a smile. I knew that smile meant I want to hear all the drama. "Your sister?" I questioned. "Yeah Abby Anderson she's my sister." Lev replied. Wait thee Abby Anderson gosh was she popular, also a year ahead of me and graduated last year. "Did she go to Jackson high as well?" I questioned. "Yup that's my sister." Lev said proudly. It was cute how Lev got excited to talk about his sister like that. "I'm adopted if you're wondering. Abby's dad was kind enough to take me and my sister Yara in." He said but his tone changed to a very sad one the moment he said Yara. "Yara? Did she go to Jackson high as well?" I asked. "No she was um very sick." He said, his head lowered and eyes drooping. Was. That meant something had happened. "Oh I'm so sorry Lev." Was all I could say and I gave him a hug. "It was a long time ago. Enough sad talk." He said brushing the issue off and quickly got back to his normal vibe yet I could see it pained him to talk about Yara. "So I heard about Andrew." He groaned. "Ugh what a creep I can't believe that guy." I said in disgust. "Last time he harassed Cat and Ellie went berserk she actually punched him which broke his nose and although Andrew was in the wrong Ellie got into way more trouble." Lev told me. "Cat I know her she's in my year." I said. Kat was beautiful she had short black hair, clear fair skin and she was a really nice person. I even heard she could do tattoos. "She works here occasionally so I guess she'll fill in on your off days." Lev said. I quickly got out my lunch it was some basic sandwiches with my favourite filling. Lev also got out some lunch except his looked so gourmet and had much thought put into it. "So can you continue your rivalry story?" He asked with pleading eyes. "Yeah, yeah let's get into it." I rolled my eyes and took a bite from my sandwich. "So as I was saying I really liked Riley too. And she was in ninth grade so it wasn't going to be easy to get her attention for Ellie or me. And then one day all the juniors got invited to this party so juniors were grade 8 and grade 9." I said. "I know what juniors are I go to school too Y/N." Lev said. "Oh yeah, what school do you go to?" I asked him. "I go to W.L.F but since we are private I've finished already just waiting for results." He said. Damn Lev is fancy. "And Ellie told me that Riley was going to be at the party and she was super excited she even practiced pick up lines and got me to review and rate them. I encouraged Ellie to make a move on Riley and she was super confident in it too. So at the party we played some games like truth or dare, never have I ever and seven minutes in heaven. And during truth or dare I dared Ellie to kiss the hottest girl in the circle and she kissed Riley. But things got real at seven minutes in heaven." I said. Lev was chewing his fancy food and nodded whilst eagerly waiting for more. "We had to put an item of ours in the bag and when we got chosen we go with the person who's item we picked from the bag. Riley was first to go and she picked out my matching best friends necklace with Ellie which makes this story much more ironic." I said. "Ooh not the best friends necklace from Claire's." Lev said mouth stuffed with food. That comment made me giggle because the necklace was certainly from Claire's. "Me and Riley ended up making out and this was my first kiss and when the closet got opened it was really obvious that we were making out. Ellie looked so heartbroken especially as Riley handed me back my matching necklace." I said with a small sigh. "Is that it?" Lev questioned eyebrow raised. "No there's way more." But before I could continue Abby entered the kitchen. "Hey Lev and umm." She said looking at me. "Y/N." I replied with a smile. "Nice to meet you Y/N I'm Abby." She greeted and put out her hand for me to shake. Gosh this girl has muscles I was probably staring too. "I know." I replied. Ew did I just sound like a creep now? Abby just chuckled and shook my hand and I could see her muscles move as she did this. Lev burst out laughing and I could have died. "What?" Abby questioned. "No nothing at all." Lev said in between laughs. "Well Ellie is going on break so would it be okay for you to go back to the front?" Abby asked me. "Yeah no problem." I said and left Abby and Lev to their conversation. I attended to customers, made coffees, I even left orders for Lev in the kitchen. Maria occasionally came to check on me and watch me as I worked through the day. This job wasn't all that bad maybe I could get through this in one piece.

Ellie's POV:
Maria had woken me up at 6:30 am for what I don't even know. I was super pissed that Y/N got the job out of all people. I was even more pissed, because Maria made me add Y/N to our café WhatsApp group and she/they actually messaged asking how I had her/their number. I know Maria needed the extra help, because Tommy was taking the piss. Ever since Joel passed away my life has just been going downhill. I thought a break from school would be amazing and I usually don't mind working at the café. Lev is nosy, I like Cat and Abby is alright but not the hype she is presented to be, but Y/N is just pure horrid and evil. I really missed Joel and I know Tommy and Maria did too, but life was feeling very sucky since Joel died. I was meant to go live with Tommy and Maria upstate away from this shit hole but I need to finish my schooling because as Maria says "It will be too disrupting for your education." I don't disagree. I quickly brushed my teeth and showered. I tied my hair in a messy half up do and wore baggy green cargo pants and a joy division shirt. I put on a couple of rings on my fingers and I looked presentable. At least my tattoo is cool I thought and looked down at my forearm. I never made an effort to pack lunch unless a Diet Coke and cigarettes count. If I was feeling hungry I could always ask Lev to make me something. Tommy was passed out from drinking and Maria was cleaning up the mess he had left behind. "Why do you even bother?" I asked. She just sighed. "He's going to do it again so why clean up after him?" I asked again. "He's depressed we'll figure something out." She replied. "Yeah you and Tommy should figure something out." I said as I got my jacket from the coat rack. 7:30 am gosh it's not even opening time. "We should head off." Maria said as she covered Tommy with a blanket. The café was only a couple minutes from Maria's house so we didn't really talk much on the way. I saw Y/N standing and shivering in the cold. I thought that bitch was a cold blooded snake the cold shouldn't affect her/them. Maria opened the door for Y/N and greeted her/them. Over my dead body would I willingly interact with Y/N L/N out of work purposes. I looked around for an apron for Y/N, because Maria will be on my case if I don't get her/them ready and prepared to work. "Your apron." I huffed and threw an apron on the counter for Y/N. "Thanks." She/they muttered. I watched Y/N examine the apron. Why did she/they look so happy, gross. I got back to cleaning and I could feel Y/N's gaze on me. What the hell does this snake want now? Luckily for me Lev entered and eased the tension. "Hi Lev." I greeted and Lev greeted "Hi Ellie, Abby is coming in for extra help at around 10 am." I just nodded and wondered why we needed Abby's help. I continued cleaning the tables and Lev enthusiastically said "Customers are going to start coming in let's get to work." That kid was way too energetic. Y/N and I managed to avoid each other whilst cleaning up and prepping for customers. Just then a customer came in, this was going to be Y/N's first order and hopefully she/they wouldn't mess it up, because if she/they did Maria would blame me. I got back to doing some other things when I noticed this guy and the way he was looking at Y/N was downright disgusting. This was that guy who harassed Cat, imagine having the nerve to come back here after I beat the shit out of him. What an asshole. I approached Y/N upon realising this. "Go make his drink." I told her/them. I looked at this Andrew guy and asked "Do you remember me?" His facial expression dropped to the depths of hell. "Yeah you remember me." I said. "I wasn't doing anything at all." He said defensively. "Yeah sure we'll see about that huh." I scoffed fighting every urge to break his nose again. I'll call Maria she'll handle this better. Y/N was about to go give this creep his drink when I stopped her/them and said "Don't entertain creeps, I'll go get Maria." I rushed to Maria's office and said "Andrew." She immediately knew and rushed out to the front. Maria told the guy off and customers were looking at her like she was crazy. For the rest of the time I zoned out not wanting to think about creeps or anything in general. The shift wasn't so bad, but seeing girls flirt with Y/N made me scoff and think do you know what a snake she/they is/are? Y/N took her/their lunch break and obviously went to talk with Lev. I don't think the two of them realised how thin the walls were and that I could here most of what they were saying. I was just surprised that, that snake Y/N could tell the story of why I hate her/them accurately. Listening to some parts of the story made me miss those times, but I wasn't the one who chose to ruin everything. As I was eavesdropping Abby entered. I lifted up my hand as a greeting to Abby and she did the same. Working with Abby was not that terrible except when she spoke about her dad and how much she loves him as if my dad were alive for me to relate. We didn't talk that much today we just carried out our shifts. "Abby I'm taking a break." I said and with that I walked out to the back of the café. I put my earphones in and took out a smoke. Ever since I started working at the café my lunch breaks were taken near the dumpster and spent either smoking or listening to music sometimes even both. I chuckled to myself gosh I sound like I'm trying to be a mysterious boy in those straight girl romance books. Today's song was Boys don't cry by The cure. So I try to laugh about it. Cover it all up with lies. I try to laugh about it. Hiding the tears in my eyes. Sounds familiar to me. Sounds like someone I know. Sounds like me. Maybe things may get better or a whole lot worse, who knows?
