"Order up!"

I finished taking the order of a rather rude elderly woman and quickly rushed to the freshly cooked food waiting at the counter. I blew my hair out of my face in frustration, anticipating my break. I needed a damn cigarette for having to deal with the rush of so many cranky ass  customers.

"Are you alright, sister?" Jimmy called from behind the counter once I had retreated with the order of a man who maintained such an ugly look upon his face. I didn't reply to Jimmy as I was too embarrassed from Sasha trying to play cupid. The man glared at me from across the diner as I proceeded towards him.

Pasting a fake smile on my face, I gave him his food like a humble servant. "Can I get you anything else?" I asked as politely as I could muster. "Yeah, a wife who isn't a total whore," he grunted and took a sloppy bite of his hamburger.

Ooookay, I thought to myself, backing away from the grumpy little man.

The bells chimed indicating we had another customer. Crossing my fingers that he wouldn't be a complete dick like those previously served, I walked to his table. "What can I get you today, sir?" I asked, despite cigarettes calling me away from him.

His eyes drilled into mine while responding in a monotone voice, "I'd like a cup of coffee. Black. And eggs. Over easy." I told him it'd be right up and began turning around to let Jimmy know.

"Aren't you going to write down my order?" His voice was stern causing me to freeze. I smiled weakly as I slowly turned to face him. "Already did," I said, tapping my finger twice against my temple.

He grunted in reply.

"What is up with everyone grunting today?" I complained to Jimmy upon reaching the counter. "Must be something in the coffee," he smirked.

"Well dump it down the drain! I am tired of being here." I let out a sigh.

He chuckled before reassuring me I can go on break soon. I looked into his eyes and thanked him profusely.
Jimmy slid me the upcoming order. Sighing again, I delivered the meal to the grunting customer. Insantly he seemed to cheer up, flashing me a smile once receiving his food. It seemed genuine as he thanked me. "Do you need anything else?" I asked, feeling slightly better.

"Nah," he replied, "you did well."

Sitting outside the building I inhaled deeply on my cigarette. "That's bad for you," a cold voice said from behind me causing me to instantly jump and turn to face the source. I was standing face to face with my last served customer. I shrugged, "so is wasting my life away as a waitress."

He smiled gently as he replied, "well I'm sure you won't be stuck here forever." Probably not but I appreciated his kind words. "Well I got to get going," he explained, "I have a few errands to run." I waved goodbye as I put out my cigarette.

Once returning inside, I began cleaning his table and was astonished to find he had left a fifty dollar tip.
