It's 1940, and London had just been attacked. Emmeline Stone, her twin brother Ryder and their mom Elizabeth lived in Saint Albans, outside of London. Her father Thomas had fallen in the war, and she would never forget the last things he told her. "If they find out about you, they will come for you. If they come for you, you have to run and hide. Stay together and stay with people you can trust. Remember, Ryan, Em, I love you so much. I promise I'll be back."
That was one promise broken, who knew how many more there would be?
"You have it for tonight, darling," whispered Jane, and she tucked him in just as Mary Poppins used to do...
Emily shut her book with a bang as she heard two quick knocks on the door. She crept out of her room to see her mother peering through the window with her twin brother Ryan perched on the seat next to her. She waited patiently for her mother to open up the door. It had to have been her best friend Mei Lee coming over to ask Emily to play. Emily started to daydream about what adventures she and Mei would get up to today when her mother gasped.
"Emily, Ryan, its them. Get in the wardrobe and don't make a sound" her mother ordered, her voice thick with fear. "Do you remember what your dad told you before he left?" The twins nodded. "If they come for you, run and hide. Stay safe and remember we love you."
Emily gasped. "Mom what about you?" she asked, tears streaming down her face.
"Don't worry about me, just go hide! Remember, I love you both so much and I'm so proud of you."
Emily grabbed her brother's hand and the two of them sprinted to Emily's wardrobe. Ryan flung open the door and they pushed their way through Emily's clothes to the back of her wardrobe, shutting the door softly behind them. Emily's heart was racing and she gripped Ryan's hand. He gave a squeeze and she smiled at him through her tears. She noticed her brother's face was also stained with tears and he was leaning on her shoulder for support. She heard the door creek open, and her mothers voice had lost all the fear from before.
"Where are the twins?" a man yelled outside the cupboard.
"They have gone with their aunt Lulu, they left this morning" her mom replied.
"LIES" the man shouted. "TELL ME WHERE THEY ARE RIGHT NOW!"
"NO" her mother yelled back.
The next thing the twins heard were two loud gunshots ringing across the house. Emily gasped and sobbed quietly, falling into Ryder's tight embrace. Footsteps were heard coming closer and closer to Emily's room. She held her breath and tried not to make a sound. Quietly the twins pushed their way to the back of the wardrobe, further and further until...
A/N: First chapter done! It's short sorry (I wanted to set the scene a little bit) and probably not the best but hopefully you enjoyed it! I recommend listening to the songs while you read.
