I'll Remember
Chapter 11
She's what?
Mary was by far not a police officer. Actually she was a scientist engineer. She would make gadgets they would use in law enforcement. She was rather good at it too. There was one thing she made by accident. Her aim was to make a contraption that could heat up the snow under a patrol car so they could get out of their parking spot fast enough to help. It was a stupid thing to make, but she did it because she was bored and on bed rest for the unforeseen future.
So here she was testing the machine on the wet parking lot as it had just rained. Slick ground was horrible to be on. Gasping as the ground around her opened up and began to float up and into the sky.
She turned to look at the machine and then the huge clod of dirt. She turned off the machine watching the mound hit the dirt with a great thump.
Both John and George ran out of the house and looked over the large mound of upturned earth.
"Mary...what happened? Are you okay?" John asked as George walked over to the machine and looked at it.
"What is it?" George asked bunting it with his foot. The beam turned back on and lifted up John's car. The blue hatchback floated up over there head before the machine coughed up smoke, and caught fire. The car hit the ground causing the ground around them to shake and shutter, and the windows shattered leaving the ground littered with glittering shards.
"Sorry about that John." George apologized. John sighed as he looked over the damage of his ever faithful car.
"Looks like I'll have to ride with you to work." John straightened his hat. He leaned down to his much shorter sister. "Be good."
"Nah." She giggled as she waved the notion away.
"Then be good at it." John winked at her, kissing her fingers before climbing into the passenger's seat of his brother-in-law's car.
Some weeks passed by and Mary's gravitron ray was working perfectly. So much so that she had several things floating around the yard. Pine cones, picnic table, a pitcher of iced tea, and oh the dog...
"I'm telling you Mary, that ray is perfect for search and rescue missions!" John told his sister who giggled as she took a sip of her glass of iced tea. It wasn't too hot outside, actually it felt nice and comfortable. Perfect spring air.
"Maybe...but I still think unchecked this has the potential to cause problems. Tomorrow I'm takin it to headquarters to keep it safe. Until then it'll be in my vault. No one in and no one out except for me." She put her hand into the device and then pulled it out again. A thin bloody line along her middle finger told John exactly what that meant. Blood coding.
"Are you sure about this honey? We could drop it off on our way there." George tried. Mary smiled as she ran her fingers over her swollen belly.
"No, tonight's all about fun and I'm going to dance with you till your legs fall off." George laughed at his wife.
"Oh please have mercy." He playfully swooned.
John's head hurt like hell. He couldn't move, and there was a bright light over his head. He lay on a flatbed soft beeping echoed within the concrete room.
"Good morning Gadget...it would seem you had a lovely dream. Better than those nightmares we've been having...right?" There was a low chuckle. A cat jumped up onto the table and lay on John's chest. John tried his best to push away from the man who walked over with a screwdriver.
"Your sister was a tough nut to crack. It took me a good five years to win her over." He chuckled, grabbing John's jacket and pulling it apart buttons and all.
"Who are you? How do you know my sister?" John asked, cringing as the man's cold hands grabbed his shirt and pulled it apart. "This is unwanted contact!" John called out. Just what was this man planning to do to him?
"Unwanted contact?" He chuckled, leaning in and whispered to him. "Would you like to know what happened? Really really?" He asked slowly, pulling off his mask looking down at John with the biggest smile on his face.
John's heart stopped, he just dreamed about this man, a man he had only ever seen without a face. The voice had changed, but the metal piece around his throat told him what happened. His face told him who he was. It made him so angry.
"George." He spat.
