I wait on the stump in the darkness with my eyes on the horizon. My bum feels numb from sitting on the uncomfortable surface for so long. My chest aches with anxiety. It's the longest few hours of my life. They should have been back ages ago. Where are they? Aki comes with a blanket and tea. He urges me to go inside, but I don't.
A figure appears from the darkness. It's Ted, and he's riding Kaya's horse towards us. Where are the others? I met the horse halfway. It's carrying bags of supplies. They did it, but what was the cost? He dismounts the mare and hugs me. His eyes are bloodshot. His face is red. His nose is snotty. Everyone runs out of the house to see what is happening.
"Where are the others?" I say, but he shakes his head.
"Where is Kaya?" Kobayashi yells with panic.
"Kaya got shot. She was bleeding out. I wouldn't leave her, so Matsu stayed with her so that I could get away with the supplies," he repeats.
"This is all your fucking fault! My daughter is dead because of you!" Kobayashi shouts with tears in his eyes. He launches towards me, but Aki stops him and pulls him back. Kobayashi heads inside.
I can't believe it. I can't fucking believe it. First, my parents and now Matsu. My eyes fill with tears but I don't cry, I can't. I thought the void in my heart was finally begging to heal, but now it aches more than ever.
