I knock on the red door of the Johnsons' home anxiously awaiting on the front porch.
I was a ball of nerves when Mrs. Johnson opened the door and greeted me. I gave her a hug and handed her a bouquet of flowers.
Being in their home again after a year feels .... weird but welcoming.
The atmosphere wasn't awkward or unwelcoming
I look at the numerous photos of my friend hanging around the place. A reminder that Maya isn't here to greet me or squeal my name from the top of the stairs before jumping onto me, occasionally making me lose my balance and toppling over.
I miss her. I miss my little sister, my friend.
"Ren, long time no see. We missed you son"
Jordan, Maya's dad says pulling me into a hug. They always treated me like a son.
He was a tall man with almond skin, hazel eyes and curly hair, slowly greying on the sides. He's a real funny guy with all the dad jokes once you get to know him.
When we first met he purposely gave me a hard time and asked me to help grill lunch knowing I can't grill food without it turning charcoal after Maya warned him not to. It was embarrassing to say the least but he taught me how and invited me over every other week.
I was basically adopted into the Johnson Family on our first meeting.
Lunch went well Gina, her mom set up the table on the patio. We had steak and fries along with fresh salad, lemonade vanilla snaps and cheesecake for dessert.
We caught each other up on our lives- mostly mine over my time here.
While I was on my 2nd slice of cheesecake Gina and Jordan looked at me with smiles present on their faces while Gina wrapped herself in a lavender scarf and Jordan pulled her chair close.
"What?" I say in between bites.
"We're glad you came over my boy. I know I'm over exaggerating when I say this but"
"It felt like years since we've had lunch like this with you. We know you avoided us like the plague feeling guilty about everything that's happened and I don't blame you for it. Anyone in your shoes would do what you did but we want you to know that we are here for you. And the one we blame for our daughters passing is that truck driver not you."
Mrs. Johnson then spoke up "When we visited you in the hospital we were heartbroken seeing you in that bed. You looked lifeless. And your parents looked like they were hanging on to a miracle that you'd open your eyes. Ren you may not be ours by blood but always remember you have us and I'd love it if we continue our tradition of weekends lunches and dinners."
"I've missed those too" I say wholeheartedly.
When I met Maya who then introduced me to her parents on a weekend in April for Easter. I was pleasantly surprised they already knew me to a point.
Turns out my Parents were long time friends with The Johnsons in high school but Their friendship faded when they eventually separated from high school into college. They did reconnect when I was born years later when Gina and my mom Diane met at some grocery.
At that time the Johnsons lived in another country and were just visiting N.Y. at that time. So when I was at Maya's house with Sadie for a sleepover during Summer break I found out through a video call with my mom that they knew each other when Gina heard my moms voice then saw her on screen.
The rest of the day was spent in absolute bliss. I really missed hanging out with them.
To others it may seem weird hanging out with your friends' parents but for me I saw them as my second parents.
And to think I was nervous coming over. I got jittery for nothing
When It was time for me to go I hugged Gina tightly and Jordan patted my pack already making plans for my next visit.
She handed me a bag containing today's food and dessert and kissed my cheek wishing me safe travels.
I didn't miss it when they both said goodbye to me in ASL from the driveway.
My eyes glossed over at the sight. I was really lucky to have them.
