Spring break.
While all my peers were off partying amongst palm trees, aquamarine waters, and sands of white, I was seeking some sense of normalcy in the confines of my best friend's bedroom.
"No matter how long I've been gone for, the sight of your teal comforter will never stop feeling like home," I commented, tossing my duffel bag onto the carpet, and spreading out across Addison's bed. "Now all I need to do is last another two months in Manhattan and I can be back here permanently."
Addison furrowed her brows as she curled up beside me, propping her head in her hand. "You still dislike New York that much, huh? I thought that maybe you would have changed your mind after..."
I raised my brows, urging her to continue. "After the break-up?" I wrinkled my nose. "Despite what Matt has led you to believe, my discontentment with the city isn't just solely based on being separated from him."
She shrugged and it was clear that she was on his side more than mine. I cleared my throat. "How is he doing by the way?"
Sighing, she picked at a pom-pom lining her linens. "Let's just say that I didn't think it was possible for him to get any moodier, but surprise, surprise, turns out I was wrong. He threw an absolute tantrum when I used one of his precious books as a coaster."
"Is it the one with the old man on the cover?"
"Yes!" She exclaimed, sitting up straight. "He's really protective of that one."
Smiling wistfully, I rolled over onto my back and stared up at the ceiling. "That novel has always been his favorite." Then biting my lip, I glanced over at Addison. "Does he ever talk about me?"
She looked away as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Um...not really but you know he's as much guarded as that geezer novel is." She blew out a breath. "I'm certain he misses you a ton though."
"Yea?" A flair of hope sparked inside my chest, and I pulled myself up. "I'm thinking about visiting him."
Addison's features softened as she stared at me. "V...do you think that's wise? If Matt was looking to get back together then I'm sure he would be banging down the door right this instant to speak with you."
I grasped my friend by the arms, making her look at me. "I have to find out if he still loves me, Addison. I need to know that there's still a chance for us."
Groaning, she dropped her head into her hands. "I think it's a mistake and you'll only end up feeling disappointed by his response, but I know you well enough to know that there is no talking you out of this. So, at least let me be present to play referee. I'm meeting him at the diner in two hours for dinner. He will absolutely murder me with that scythe of his for saying this, but you're welcome to tag along."
Clapping my hands, I squealed. "Fantastic!" I was already off the bed and inside my friend's walk-in closet, deciding on an outfit that screamed, "I don't care that you shattered my heart into a thousand pieces, but I also wouldn't oppose you sticking your tongue down my throat for old time's sake."
I pulled out a yellow sundress with tiny white daisies printed onto the fabric and held the garment up against my body. "Does this make you want to fuck me?"
Addison cocked her head towards one side, studying me. "I think," she replied slowly. "That piece would look a bit silly out on a pitcher's mound but for a casual dinner with an ex-boyfriend, it may just do the trick."
I instantly shed the pair of faded blue jeans and graphic t-shirt I was wearing before shimmying into the scrap of fabric that the designers had the audacity to label as a dress. "I can't breathe in this thing," I panted, struggling to pull up the zipper.
