Addison
"Oh good," I replied sarcastically as I burst through Matt's front door. "You're not dead. I've been trying to get a hold of you."
I gave a pointed look at the cell he cradled in his hand. "But clearly, you weren't by your phone."
"Sorry," he mumbled glancing down at the screen distractedly. "Have you talked to Vanessa today?"
I turned my back to him as I dumped my purse and jacket onto the couch and rolled my eyes. He just can't let one conversation pass by without mentioning her name, can he?
I sighed. "No, Matt, I haven't."
He slumped back against the couch. "I keep trying to call her, but she's sending me to voicemail."
"Gee," I said, taking a seat beside him. "Do you think that perhaps, she's busy right now?"
Matt stared at me with a pained expression, and I patted his hand. "I'm sure she's probably just studying and needs the quiet," I assured.
He bit his lip. "Or she's avoiding me. Can you try getting a hold of her?"
Another eye roll.
"Listen, Matt. I'm sure she will call back when she can. Give it a rest for a little while and don't turn into one of those annoying boyfriends who incessantly blow up a girl's phone the moment she stops desperately waiting by it for him to call."
"I'm not incessantly blowing up her phone." He stared at me, wounded, and I felt as though I had just taken a bone from a puppy.
"How many outgoing calls are on there then?" I challenged, nodded at his phone.
He averted his gaze, blushing as he shrugged.
"Hey!" he exclaimed when I snatched the mobile from his fingers and scrolled to recent activity.
"Seventeen calls, Matthew?!" I shrieked in disbelief. "You're lucky she hasn't blocked you by now."
He gazed at me, his grey eyes pathetically pleading. "What if something is very wrong with her? Please, Addie. Can't you just try once?"
I sighed. "Fine, but I don't want to hear her name for the rest of the night."
I punched in her number on my cell, but the call immediately went to voicemail.
"Hey, it's Vanessa. Leave me a message."
"See?" I said, giving Matt an annoyed glare. "She's busy."
"Or dead," he muttered miserably.
"For fuck's sake, Matt, she's fine." I was quickly losing my patience with his moping and contemplated why I had even bothered coming over.
Just then, his cellphone illuminated with a picture of him and Vanessa kissing at the phone. Jumping to his feet, he quickly answered the call.
"Hey, sweetheart!" he greeted as he began pacing back and forth. "I was worried about you."
He furrowed his brows as he listened to what she had to say. "Uh-huh, I see."
I lifted a brow. Whatever she was telling him wasn't good news.
"What do you mean you're not coming home for spring break?" he suddenly burst out.
I winced at the unpleasant interaction and debated on bailing and slinking out through the front door. The last thing I wanted to sit through was an argument between Matt and his girlfriend.
"You're going to the Jersey Shore with Quinn?" he repeated. "I thought you didn't even like her."
"I haven't seen you since February," he continued through gritted teeth. "And we barely even saw each other then. Don't you miss me at all?"
