Matt

Just like clockwork, Vanessa flew through the door sweaty and out of breath as though she had been racing to get back to the dorm.

"Matt, hi," she greeted me with a kiss on the cheek. "I'm so glad you decided not to listen to me and show up anyways. As it turns out, the paper was a breeze to write, and I finished early."

"Where are your books and backpack?" I demanded, giving her a sweeping gaze.

"Oh...um." She averted her gaze. "I have the whole paper saved on a flash drive." Patting her purse, she moved towards her closet to change. "Also, the library has computers with everything I could ever need to know on the internet, so why lug around a heavy bag if I don't have to?"

"Mm, I see," I replied noncommittedly, unsure as to whether I believed her.

Sighing, I glanced at the clock on her bedside table. "Have you eaten, or would you like to go out to dinner? All the upscale restaurants are probably booked by now, but I'm sure we could still have an enjoyable time grabbing some ramen or pizza."

She bit her lip as she sifted through her clothing. "Well, it's funny you should mention it because I just so happen to know a place we can go to. A friend of mine that I...uh...ran into at the library invited me to a party tonight. We should go."

I grimaced. "V, you know social gatherings aren't really my thing. Besides, it doesn't really spell out romance to me. Why don't we order a pizza to go and cuddle up and watch movies instead?"

Now it was her turn to make a face. The action earned a lifted brow from me. "Is that not what you want to do?" I inquired.

She shrugged. "I don't know. It's just that you know I've been struggling to make friends here so to be invited to something such as this, is sort of a big deal to me. Haven't you been encouraging me to embrace the city life?"

She glanced over at me cautiously and I felt my resolve weakening.

Oh, she's clever. Using my own words against me to get her way.

I tossed up my hands. "Alright, V. You win."

"Yay!" she exclaimed, jumping up and down. "You're the best boyfriend ever."

She tugged off her sweatshirt to change into the black dress that she had set on the bed and that's when I noticed the little red heart drawn onto her skin.

"What's that all about?" I asked, pointing towards her hip.

Her cheeks flushed as she glanced down. "Oh, that?"

A nervous laugh bubbled out of her throat, and I gave her a pointed look that urged her to continue.

She shrugged. "I had a slump of writer's block, so I doodled on myself to get the creative juices flowing again."

I narrowed my eyes, unsure of what to make of the tale she was feeding me. "That seems an odd and inconvenient spot to draw on yourself, don't you think?"

She quickly slipped the dress over her body, covering the piece of artwork. "I didn't want an obvious location. I'm not twelve, and it would have felt childish to paint it on my hand."

"I guess," I replied reluctantly.

Giggling, she tugged on my hands to pull me up. "You're being silly, Matt. It's a doodle. Let's go have some fun!"

I really am the best boyfriend ever, I thought bitterly as I leaned against a brick wall while sipping on a lukewarm beer.
