"Hey, babe, what's up?" Alex's voice came through my phone after answering my call.
"Uh, this may seem sudden and unexpected, but since my mom hasn't got much time left and that we haven't planned anything for our wedding yet, I was thinking that uh, well, maybe you could come up here and bring your sisters and your parents with you and we could just get married up here?" I asked, unsure if Alex would be okay with that idea.
After a few seconds of silence, Alex spoke again, "You sure about this?"
I sighed, "I want my mom to see us get married, and I know she'll want to as well."
"We haven't even got any rings ye-" She began but I quickly cut her off.
"Don't worry about that, we'll sort it out later. It's just a piece of paper that says we're married and after the season ends, we could have a party or something."
Alex was quiet again for a few seconds before I heard her unzipping a bag, "Okay, I'll quickly pack a bag and book an flight. You think that floral summer dress I have would be okay to wear?"
I chuckled, "Yeah, it will be. I'll sort out an officiant and get everything ready."
I felt a mixture of excitement and nerves as I ended the call with Alex. The idea of getting married so suddenly and bringing the wedding to my mom seemed crazy, but it also felt right. I knew that time was running out, and I wanted my mom to be a part of this important milestone in our lives.
Over the next few hours, I made the necessary arrangements for the wedding. I found an officiant who was available on short notice and willing to perform the ceremony at the hospital. I also reached out to a local florist and ordered a beautiful bouquet for Alex and had a talk with the hospital staff and informed them of our plans, and they kindly offered to decorate the room for the occasion. Brian found out the plans and told Georgia, Rick, Keith and Peter, now they've said they'll be there.
The next day, everything was set in motion. The hospital room was transformed into a makeshift wedding chapel, with flowers adorning the walls and a small table set up in the corner for the exchange of vows. The atmosphere was both somber and celebratory, a mix of emotions that mirrored the bittersweet nature of the occasion.
I wasn't wearing anything too fancy, just a simple white shirt and black pants I had packed. The officiant, a kind older man, stood at the front of the room, ready to begin the ceremony. My family, including my dad, Brian, Georgia, Rick, Keith, and Peter, sat in chairs lined up at the back of the room, with mom in her bed in the center of them. She had a weak smile on her face, her eyes shining with tears.
And then, Alex walked into the room, looking absolutely breathtaking in her floral summer dress. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of her, and I couldn't help but smile widely. The room seemed to light up with her presence as she made her way towards me, her eyes never leaving mine.
The officiant cleared his throat and began the ceremony, his voice filling the room. I held onto Alex's hand tightly, finding comfort in her touch. As the officiant spoke about love and commitment, I couldn't help but get lost in the moment.
"Do you have rings?" the officiant asked, interrupting my thoughts.
"We, uh, didn't have time to get rings," I admitted, feeling a bit sheepish.
"You two can use our wedding rings, just for the exchange." Georgia said with a smile as she pulled her wedding ring off her finger. Brian did the same, passing his own ring to Alex.
"Thank you," Alex murmured, her voice filled with gratitude as she took the ring and slipped it onto my finger. I did the same with the ring Georgia had given me, feeling its weight on my finger.
