"We're here to see Elizabeth Taylor," Ellie said politely to the receptionist here at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary.

"Family?" The receptionist asked, looking up from the computer screen in front of her.

"I'm one of her daughters." Ellie responded.

The receptionist nodded and smiled, telling us what room number Elizabeth was in as well as the directions. Ellie thanked her and we both followed the directions to her mom's hospital room.

It was currently mid-January, and Ellie and I were enjoying as much time together as we could before the first international window opened and pre-season began with the league. Just a few days ago, Ellie got a phone call from one of her brothers, notifying her that their mom's condition was worsening from the cancer she was fighting. I opted to come with her, even if I'm not welcomed.

I told my family about the engagement and they were thrilled and happy for Ellie and I, except for my mom even though she says she's happy for us. I could tell over the years that she hasn't really been happy with me dating a woman, but it's my life and she'll just have to continue dealing with it. Ellie hasn't told anyone about our engagement, only her parents, her sister Georgia, and her brothers except Bruce. I don't blame her for not telling everyone in her family and I'm sure she doesn't care.

We both walked into her mom's room and found her dad sitting next to her mom, holding her hand. I felt my heart warm with affection as I looked at them, something about a elderly couple holding hands like that is just so beautiful and sweet.

Elizabeth looked over and smiled as she saw us, "Ellie, oh dear, I'm so glad to see you," she said.

Eddie looked at me and smiled, giving me a little nod as a way to say 'Hi'.

"Hey, mom," Ellie said as she gave Elizabeth a hug as I sat down. "How are you feeling?"

"Oh, just wonderful," she responded sarcastically with a little smirk, making us all laugh.

The four of us chatted for a good few minutes about Ellie and I's NWSL Championship win, and both Elizabeth and Eddie were telling us how excited they were watching it on the TV. Then Elizabeth grabbed Ellie's hand, "Alex, dear," she gasped, "Is this the ring you got Ellie?"

I nodded, "Yeah. I knew Ellie would've wanted something simple instead of an expensive one with a big diamond." I explained, "I saw that one, and thought it'd be perfect."

"It is perfect, Alex. God, another one of my children is getting married." Elizabeth looked at me, and grabbed my hand, "You look after her."

"Oh, I will. I've somehow put up with her for a very long time now," I said, making Eddie and Elizabeth laugh.

After a short while, we decided to leave to continue giving Eddie and Elizabeth some more time alone. I could see in Ellie's eyes that she was somewhat hopeful her mom will get better, but that seems to be a long shot.

5 weeks later.

Ellie's POV.

Our first national team camp has been a bit crazy so far and our first game was in a few hours. The past week has been practice, media, practice, rest, media and so on. Apparently Carli had made some comments but I don't really care about that right now. All I care about at the moment is my mom and her declining health.

Right now it was 6:30am, Kelley was in the bathroom as I was sitting on the edge of my bed, reading the text that Brian sent me, letting me know that another tumor had been found in my mom's body. I felt my body go slightly numb as I put my phone down and stared at the floor.
