Klaus stood outside the room as Hayley spoke to Hope over the phone. He felt a hand wrap around his, making him look over at Steve.

"You okay? You're quiet," Steve said, handing him a cup of bourbon.

Klaus took a long drink from it before answering.

"Do you have kids," Klaus asked.

"Oh, god. I hope not," Steve teased, making Klaus huff out a chuckle.

"This family stuff can be difficult. Especially when you know something that will hurt your child, but it's out of your control," Klaus said, his eyes dropping to the ground.

"What do you mean," Steve asked, "What's going on?"

Klaus lifted his eyes to look at Steve. For a moment, he looked like he was about to cry. But then his expression hardened again.

"Nothing. Forget it," Klaus said, walking away.

Steve gave a look of question as he was now more curious. He glanced inside Hayley's room.

"You can come in," Hayley said, "I know you want to talk to me."

Steve slowly walked in. He made his way over to her.

"You're Hayley Marshall, Hope's mother," Steve said.

"In the flesh," Hayley said, smiling weakly.

He barely noticed how pale and sickly she looked. Almost like she was on the verge of death.

"I'm Steve Rogers," Steve introduced, "It's a pleasure, ma'am."

"Oh, please. Don't call me 'ma'am'. It makes me feel old," Hayley teased with a smile, "I know who you are, Captain Rogers. Klaus always talked to me when I was unconscious."

"He spoke about me," Steve asked.

"He's obsessed with you," Hayley chuckled, "I need you to do something for me."

"What is it," Steve asked.

"Take care of him. When he gets low, he can become self-sabotaging. He's already lost Camille. So look out for him," Hayley said, "Please?"

"Yes, ma... Hayley," Steve said, catching himself.

"Thank you," Hayley smiled.

"Are you okay," Steve asked.

"I will be, Captain. I'm just tired," Hayley said, "I'm gonna take a short nap."

Steve was about to leave before Hayley stopped him.

"Stay with me," Hayley asked.

"Of course," Steve said, pulling up a seat.

Steve assumed Hayley was a werewolf or hybrid, making her immortal. So when he could no longer hear her heart beating, he panicked.

"Hayley... Hayley! SOMEBODY HELP," Steve shouted, trying to help her breathe with chest compressions.

Hayley's nurses rushed in to treat her as Klaus and Elijah followed behind them.

"BRING HER BACK," Klaus shouted, his hybrid eyes flexing.

"I'm trying, sir," a nurse said, fearfully.

"Hayley, love. C'mon. Don't do this. Come back to us... Hope needs you, dammit," Klaus said, tears flooding his eyes, "I need you."

The nurses stopped as they realized she was gone. There was no bringing her back.

"What are you doing? Save her," Klaus demanded.

"She's gone..."

"I will rip your heart out of your chest," Klaus growled, shoving a nurse against the wall, "Now bring my daughter's mother back!"

Steve quickly grabbed his arm, making him turn his attention to the soldier.

"Why are you even in here?! GET OUT," Klaus shouted, dropping the nurse to glare at Steve.

Steve didn't budge until Elijah grabbed his shoulder. Steve looked at Elijah, who had tears fell down his cheeks.

"It's okay. I can deal with this," Elijah croaked.

Steve glanced at Klaus once more before leaving the room. He walked out of the building entirely and got in his car. He should've known. He should've fucking known!

Steve rested his forehead on the steering wheel as he tried to calm down. His cellphone rang, making him answer it.

"Hello," Steve said, trying to sound normal over the phone.

"Hey, Rogers. We need you to come in. Got a mission for you," Tony said.

"I'm on my way."
