Hot shot was sleeping in the hospital. He just found out yesterday he has cancer. He is very nervous worried and scared. He is ready to be brave though. He is ready to fight his cancer and beat it. He was trying to sleep but his ankle was hurting a lot and it was making it hard to sleep easily with it hurting so much. He was having a very restless sleep.
Then Hot shot woke up. "Ouch!" Hot shot said holding his ankle. "That really hurts," he said.
"What is wrong?" Quickshadow asked.
"My ankle it is hurting a lot," Hot shot said.
A nurse came in. She was going to check on Hot shot. "Hot shot is something wrong?" the nurse asked.
"My ankle it hurts," Hot shot said.
"I am sorry to hear that," the nurse said. "Would you like some medicine to help?" she asked.
"Please," Hot shot said.
Then the nurse left and came back with some medicine. "Open up," the nurse said.
Hot shot opened his mouth and took the medicine.
"There that should help with the pain," the nurse told him. "It will take about 10 minutes for you to feel the effects," she said.
"Okay," Hot shot said.
Hot shot soon had his vitals checked. Then Hot shot was feeling the effects of the pain killer. His ankle wasn't hurting so much. Now he was starting to fall asleep again. He held Roxy the rhino close and then fell asleep. Hot shot was fast asleep holding Roxy close.
Hot shot was woken up a couple more times in the night. The nurses wanted to check on him to make sure he was doing alright or if he needed more pain killers for his ankle.
The next morning the sun began rise. Soon the light began to spill through Hot shot's hospital room's windows. Hot shot was starting to wake up. He stretched when he woke up.
"Good morning poppet," Quickshadow said.
"Morning mummy," Hot shot said.
A nurse came in to check on Hot shot. "Good morning Hot shot," the nurse said. "How are you feeling this morning?" she asked.
"Okay, my ankle still hurts," Hot shot said.
"I expect that, you will have more tests today to find the best time to start treatment," the nurse said. "Then we will be able to treat you more effectively," she said.
The nurse checked all of Hot shot's vitals. Then Hot shot had his breakfast. After Hot shot had breakfast he was taken to get more tests done.
Hot shot had another X-ray, another bone scan, another blood test, and an MRI. These tests were going to check whether or not the cancer has spread, and how far it has spread if it did spread. That way they can get a better idea of what is going on.
"Okay I don't see any spots on the lungs or anywhere else," the radiologist said. "So far it seems to be in Hot shot's ankle and foot. But there is a chance it maybe starting to spread," he said.
"Yes there still might be," Dr. Seala said. "But I think due to how aggressive this type of cancer can be I think it is best we start treatment as soon as possible," she said.
"Good idea," Dr. Fergus said.
"Yes and then after a few weeks depending on how things look we can go to the planned amputation when it looks like it will be needed," Dr. Elliot said. "That way Hot shot will be a bit more comfortable," he said.
"I think starting treatment first thing tomorrow will be a good idea," Dr. Seala said. The other doctors agreed on this.
Hot shot was with his mother. Dr. Seala came into the room. "We decided to start treatment tomorrow to play it safe because of the size of the sarcoma, but the good news is we don't see any sign of spreading," Dr. Seala said.
"Okay," Quickshadow said.
Hot shot was kind of nervous but he was ready to start treatment in order to get better.
But since his tests were over for the day there wasn't much to do at the moment. "What kind of things can you do here in the hospital?" Hot shot asked.
"Well Hot shot there are all kinds of things to see and do at this hospital," a nurse said. "There are playrooms, a child life zone, a library, a snack store, a frozen yogurt place, a couple of playgrounds, a gift shop and a build a bear," she told him.
"Ooh," Hot shot said. "I want to see the build a bear," he said.
"Well I don't see why not," Quickshadow said.
They made it to the build a bear. There were many bears that could be made. Hot shot even saw the dragon that was up front of the hospital. He grabbed one of the dragons. "Mummy can I have one?" Hot shot asked.
"Of course poppet," Quickshadow said.
Hot shot had his dragon stuffed and he was very happy too. He loved it a lot. He was happy when his mother paid for it.
At the end of the day Hot shot went to sleep. Hot shot was wondering what treatment was going to be like. He was nervous but ready to be brave.
Early the very next morning Hot shot was awake. The nurses were keeping him busy. They were taking his vitals. One took blood from his central line. Now Hot shot was going to have to wait.
Then a little bit later a nurse came in with some medicine. "This medicine will help with the side effects of the chemotherapy," the nurse told him.
Hot shot took the medicine. "Yucky," Hot shot said.
"Yes medicine can be yucky, but it is going to help you," the nurse told him.
"Okay," Hot shot said.
Then a bit later a nurse came in with bags of medicine. Hot shot watched her as she washed her hands. Then set up the IV and pump. Then washed her hands again. Then she clamped Hot shot's central line ends which there were two. Then she hooked them up the lines of the IV. Then started the pump. Then medicine started to go through the pump and into Hot shot.
"I didn't feel a thing," Hot shot said.
"That is the good thing about the central line," the nurse told him.
Hot shot was able to do what he wanted while the chemo went in. Hot shot was having a fine time.
"How often do I need my medicine?" Hot shot asked when a nurse came to check on him.
"You will need chemo for five to three days every two weeks," the nurse told him.
"Oh," Hot shot said. Hot shot was able to relax during most of the chemo. Tina came in and explained about hair loss.
"Your hair will fall out in about 2 weeks of starting treatment, it can happen sooner or later too," Tina said. "You might lose only little bit of hair, or your hair will thin out slowly, or you will lose all your hair really fast including your eyebrows and eyelashes," she said.
"Does it hurt?" Hot shot asked.
"No it doesn't hurt at all," Tina told him. "Some do feel some sort of discomfort," she said. "When and how quickly it happens and if you feel some sort of discomfort is different for everyone," she said.
"Oh," Hot shot said.
"Some kids like to wear wigs, while others like to wear scarves, bandanas, or hats, some chose to be bald and proud, and others chose to switch what they do from day to day," Tina said.
"I like that," Hot shot said. "I like bandanas, and knit beanie hats," he said looking at all different ones.
So Quickshadow called Heatwave who picked some up at the store and her mother who made some and sent them off.
Hot shot was hoping to have fun trying on the different bandanas and knit beanie hats. Soon the pump beeped and that meant his chemo was done for the day.
By the end of the day Heatwave had returned for his shift. Then Quickshadow had to leave. Hot shot was ready to keep on fighting and get better.
