Rayla seemed to sense that Callum was awake. "Good morning," she said without bothering to turn around. Callum sat up. "Morning," he groaned as he rolled out of bed. "Did you sleep well?" "Kind of." Rayla nodded. She focused on sharpening her blades. Shwing. Shwing. Shwing. "Don’t we have a date tonight?" Callum froze. He was secretly hoping she might forget. "Yeah. We do." Rayla nodded again. She seemed very tired. Did she sleep well?
Callum emerged from the changing room feeling refreshed. Nearby, Rayla struggled to stay awake. No, Callum concluded. She did not. She rested her head on her hand. Callum sat down next to her, but before he could say anything, they heard a sharp and urgent sounding knock. Callum jogged over to the door.
"Yes?" He was greeted by a rather young guard. "High Mage," he started nervously. "the king wishes to speak with you." He glanced into the room. "And you," he said pointing at Rayla. "Okay. You can tell him we will be there as soon as we can." The guard nodded and ran off. Callum helped Rayla up. "And on our day off," he joked. Rayla groaned in response. Rayla came out of the changing room half asleep. He wondered if she had been up all night as she walked to the bedroom door. Callum held the door for her. As she walked, she tried to rub the crusted sleep from her eyes, but she was unsuccessful.
"Are you okay?" Callum asked. "I didn't get a blink of sleep last night. I was just sitting there. Thinking. Nervous." "Nervous about what?" Rayla gulped. I've said too much! "Nothing! Crownguard stuff," she shrugged. Callum looked at her, awfully confused. "Okay..." Callum focused on his feet. What could she have to be nervous about? After what felt like hours, they approached the throne room. As the door slid inward on its large hinges, Ezran smiled. "Finally," he mumbled.
"So, what do you need?" Callum questioned. Ezran's face fell as he said in his most serious tone, "Get out of my castle." "Er... what?" Callum asked. "You heard me. Get out... on vacation!" Callum sighed. "You two deserve a nice, long break to celebrate how great you are!" Callum swore he saw Ez wink at him. "Go, go on! Go get packing! You have adventuring to do."
Callum left the room, entirely shaken, but reassured.
This is my chance.

Fanfiction"What if Rayla never left?" Yup. This story answers that question! Or, at least, it tries. I have been contemplating for FAR too long. "Hmm.. I want to make this book." But I never did. So now, I'm going to.
