"dude, you're not a real person," malia laughed as she walked out of school that day with chase and adam, adjusting the strap of her backpack.
"i'm being serious, malia," adam defended himself, crossing his arms. chase burst into laughter, shaking his head.
"adam. serious and you don't belong in the same sentence," chase teased, nudging malia as they both chuckled.
"you guys are just mad you didn't think of it first," adam huffed, kicking a pebble across the pavement as they reached the parking lot.
"right..." malia and chase said in unison, exchanging a knowing look.
malia spotted her mom's car and turned to the boys. "my mom's here, see you guys tomorrow."
the two waved as malia jogged over and slid into the front seat of melissa's minivan, dropping her bag at her feet. "hi honey, how was school?" her mom asked, glancing at her in the rearview mirror.
"good. we had a sub in math, so it was really fun," she said, twisting in her seat to face her sisters in the back. "how was school, guys?"
"fine, but i need help on my homework later," maddie sighed, rubbing her temples dramatically.
"i got you," malia chuckled, as kenzie gave a quick wave before refocusing on her ipad, completely immersed.

after a stop at home to change for dance, they arrived at the studio about an hour later. malia headed straight to her private with riley, tying her shoes tightly as she listened.
"so you have a solo this week. i don't know much about everyone else yet, but you have a lyrical piece called 'heart of stone,'" riley informed her, pulling up the music on her phone.
"thank god. i hated doing jazz last week," malia groaned as she stretched, rolling her neck.
riley smirked. "you hate jazz every week."
malia scoffed. "can you blame me? ms. abby does cheesy jazz, but when i'm in class with ms. caitlyn, it's actually fun and challenging. last week's barely had a concept."
"you have to do things you don't like sometimes, malia. it's all part of the process," riley reminded her, making malia sigh as she stood up.
"i know, i know."

pyramid rolled around, and malia walked in last, standing beside kenzie as she adjusted the bobby pins in her hair, trying to be quick so abby wouldn't call her out.
she barely noticed abby already tearing into jill about wearing boots in the studio. at least it's not me, she thought as she secured the last pin and flipped her ponytail over her shoulder.
"alright. first, i want to talk about last week. i must say, i'm a little disappointed. we were just outdanced. it's that energy level. you can't have a bunch of slugs out on stage. this weekend, we will be attending dance explosion in secaucus, new jersey. you're going to get some heavy hitters there, i'm telling you right now. i'm going to start with the pyramid."
