it was a new week at the abby lee dance company, and malia was finally back.
she had missed the previous week completely after flying to mexico with her dad, stepmom, and brothers for her dad's birthday. they'd stayed the whole week and had only gotten back late monday night. now it was tuesday morning, and the junior elite team was already in los angeles for their next two competitions.
malia walked into pyramid with the rest of the girls, looking relaxed, sun-kissed, and slightly out of place after being gone so long.
abby clapped her hands sharply. "come on girls! welcome to millennium. this is one of the premier dance studios in la. all right ladies, this week we are staying right here in california, but i want to talk about ihollywood competition. you are not focused on that competition. and i want to compliment each and every one of you on that little girl nikaya that came to our studio. you were all friendly, you all behaved like nice young ladies. mom's? i don't know what happened."
the moms shifted awkwardly until abby moved onto pyramid.
kendall was first and the only real update malia had missed was that kendall was officially back on the aldc team.
"next is malia," abby said, eyes narrowing slightly. "you missed an entire week. no dancing, no nothing. that's not okay. i get a vacation, but not in the middle of competition season."
melissa leaned forward. "abby, it was her father's birthday, and that trip was scheduled way in advance."
"well it costed her," abby replied bluntly. "a week of no dance can mess up a lot."
malia just sighed quietly, keeping her eyes forward. she hadn't expected anything else.
pyramid continued with paige, brooke, and maddie filled out the rest of bottom row, nia and chloe were in the middle and mackenzie was then at the top.
abby clasped her hands. "this week we will be attending in10sity dance competition. this is the competition that determines who is going through at nationals."
then she began assigning solos one by one. everyone got one. everyone except malia.
slowly, she raised her hand. "do i have a solo, ms. abby?"
she tried to sound calm, but the nerves slipped through.
abby shrugged. "you know, i don't know. and i'm not hurting your feelings, but i have a bunch of other kids that want to do solos."
melissa spoke up gently. "she wants to do a solo really bad."
abby pointed at her. "i understand that, but you interrupted her and wanted her not to do it because you were afraid of losing all your friends. and she missed a week? she's not ready. you're going to go to an audition and not get picked some day. get it? and you need to stand there with a smile on your face."
