melissa had pulled malia out of p.e. to work on her solo with riley. they'd barely finished when malia realized she'd missed lunch completely.
so she scarfed down some leftover pasta her mom had brought her, wiped her hands on a napkin, and hurried into social studies a few minutes late.
her teacher didn't even look up as she slipped through the door and made her way to her seat. melissa had already called to excuse her, and by now the school was used to her disappearing for dance.
"how wonderful of you to join us," kaz whispered as malia slid into the desk between him and oliver.
"i was starting to think you moved states," oliver added, smirking.
malia rolled her eyes. "very funny. i was literally dancing."
"shocking," kaz said. "you? dancing? never would've guessed."
"yeah," oliver leaned closer, lowering his voice, "we were about to send out a search party."
"please," malia muttered. "you'd get distracted and forget why you were looking."
kaz gasped quietly. "that hurts."
oliver laughed. "she's not wrong though."
"you two are so annoying," malia said, trying not to smile.
"and yet you missed us," kaz replied.
before she could shoot back, the teacher cleared their throat loudly from the front of the room.
"is there something you'd all like to share with the class?"
the three of them immediately straightened up.
"no, sir," kaz said innocently.
"then let's keep it that way," the teacher replied.
malia bit back a grin as they all turned their attention forward, the whispers finally dying down.

"girls, come on! let's go!" abby yelled as the girls and moms rushed into the studio that afternoon.
once the girls were lined up, abby scanned the room, her eyes narrowing. "holly is busy?"
"she'll be here," christi said calmly. everyone knew holly was a principal and couldn't always be at the studio like the other moms. it wasn't new.
"well, we went to starbound," abby began. "and once again, we proved that you are national champions. it's much, much, much more fun to win, ladies. now, let's talk about this week. we are headed—"
