INEZ WATCHED TREES PASS HER WINDOW AS THEY TRAVELLED THROUGH THE STREETS, she hadn't said a word since getting in the car despite the millions of things she had to say.

"Are you covering for Maria? Is that why you lied about everything, my love?" El Diablo glanced at her through the rear view mirror, watching as she stared back.

"No."

"No?"

"No." She answered flatly, tearing her eyes away.

He pursed his lips, returning his attention to the road. "My boy loved you. Made sure you were always safe. Fed. Looked after. This is how you repay my Chico?"

"I didn't betray him." Inez clarified, her voice stern.

"Liar!" El Diablo turned his entire body to smack her across the face. "You got my boy killed, Lillith."

"Why don't you believe me?" Inez screamed like a child throwing a tantrum.

"Would you like to hear a story?"

The girl mumbled under her breath. "It's not like I have a choice."

El Diablo put the car into park right outside Shabnam's backyard. Inez knew this because she ran through that same gate one night to evade the cops.

"There was a young man, nineteen years old, lived in Mexico. Aren't you a few years away from that age, mija?"

Inez remained silent.

"He was sent on a mission towns over." El Diablo laughed, shaking his head as he turned to look at Inez. "He was told to bring home the money from a drug trade. The boy was very trusted so when he come home with the cash and little bits of it were missing— I was very confused."

"What are you getting at?" The girl quizzed, leaning forward from her seat. "That my brother stole from you?"

The man placed a soft kiss to her forehead. "I knew you were smart, mija."

"Elijah wouldn't do that."

"Elijah was a thief and his death wasn't a mistake. But, the way you took out the men of that town, darling." He gave her a proud smile. "I couldn't let your talent go to waste. You were like a rabid dog, killing anything in sight. I was in awe."
