INEZ'S RETURN CAUSED ALLIANCES TO SHIFT, after what she'd done at the freshman introductions, and her actions going unpunished, nobody trusted Shabnam to keep his place at the top.A public display like that was not the actions of a girl who wanted games.
Inez wanted victory.
Marcus was dead, they couldn't use that against her.
She didn't associate with Maria or her friends inside of school, when they did speak— it was somewhere far outside of school grounds.
As far as everyone knew, Inez was on her own.
Minor cliques around the school were making efforts to induct her.
Juan made it clear he was backing her every step— as he had always done.
Soto Vatos owed her loyalty after Chico's uncle took over the Cartel back home in Juarez, it was a thanks for clearing the path for him.
In saying that, although Inez didn't make it a point to affiliate, they were there if she ever found herself needing them.
"The Council" were raking their brains, wrecking themselves to find a way to take her down before she was too far up.
Inez wasn't reprimanded for the killing of Kelly so they couldn't make some sneak play while she was in the hole.
That meant they'd have to find a new way to get back at her.
Inez kneeled before Marcus's grave, she ran her finger over his name engraved in stone. It was nothing. The time in the hole, the constant pain she was in, the heartache she'd feel when her mind blanked and visions of her family appeared in flashes, the tears that followed when she awoke and none of it was real, that pain— it all amounted to nothing. He died trying.
She shifted herself to sit against the headstone, her knees pressed to her chest. Inez watched the stars, she'd do her best to count them but, after four she'd get lost.
