"WHAT DOES BEBCHE MEAN?" THE VOICE BROKE THE TENSE SILENCE ENVELOPING THEIR TABLE. Marcus had his head turned to Inez who had hers on Katiya's shoulder. "You used to call me that on the phone; what's it mean?"
Inez let out a long breath, staring at the golden stars hanging from the ceiling above. She'd rather be anywhere but this dance at this very moment.
Katiya cleared her throat, waiting for Inez to answer.
She doesn't.
"It means—" Katiya began to speak.
"Nothing." Inez finished. "Was just cause I wanted to protect you." The girl added, leaning even further into her cousin.
"But what does it mean?" He furrowed his brows even closer together, leaning in her direction now.
Katiya cleared her throat once more, looking for a way to intercept this awkward conversation going on. "Do you want to dance?"
"Not really." The brunette answered, her bottom lip rolling between her teeth.
"Willie, take me dancing?"
The gentleman stood up, sending out his hand. Inez moved her head from Katiya's shoulder to the table as the couple left.
Now there were four and still the awkward silence.
"So?" Marcus continued to pester. It felt like he was really digging for something, like he needed to hear something specific.
"So... I need to use the bathroom." Inez stood from her seat, both hands on the table as she excused herself too.
Wandering around the halls, it was silent. The bustling of the hallways became nonexistent as she entered the bathroom. The racing of her mind began, it occurred more often now that she knew she was under the same roof as her father.
Kicking her feet, she sauntered over to the bench set in the middle of the bathroom, placing herself down.
The music from the dance was still heard but, it did nothing to drown out her thoughts.
