SAN FRANCISCO WAS STORMING, LIGHTNING STRIKING THE BUSTLING CITY, it matched the fury raging around inside Inez's head.

She was forgiving, she was compassionate. She was none of the above.

She was fake.

Trying to be everything she believed he'd want her to be.

It was days like today where Inez despised her mere existence, and the existence of everybody around her.

It should've been Marcus, Maria— anyone but Chico.

Inez wanted a break. She wanted to be numb, so she did what she'd always do when she wanted to feel nothing.

Drink.

Somewhere in Oakland there was Inez, swaying to music, six shots down and plenty more to go. Her hair a tragic mess and liquor tainting her breath with every word she sung.

At least she was happy.

"Has anyone seen Angel?" Willie asked around the school, Katiya in tow. "I just want to see how she's doing today? I know it might be rough."

Juan did a once over of the boy before shaking his head. "It's best to leave her alone today. Chico's death day and her birthday?" He took a breath. "She'll be angry."

"Today's her birthday?" Willie uttered, his heart sinking. "Chico died on her birthday?"

Instead of confirming Juan walked away. Willie was already submerged in guilt, learning they've gone and ruined her birthday with memories of Chico dying. Made him feel a million times worse.

"It wasn't your fault." Katiya consoled, watching as Willie shrunk at the realisation. "You didn't kill him."

"No but, I watched him be killed. I'm just as much to blame." Willie mumbled, pulling himself away from her. "Imma be in my dorm, yo. Don't need me."

Willie spent the rest of his day rotting in his room, overcome in so much despair.

He didn't care when it first happened. In fact; he was glad Chico was dead.
