CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: WE'RE THE ONES WHO LIVE
🥀🖤
MELANIE BARELY GOT any sleep that night despite being in Carl's arms. The stress and anxiety of the next day weighed on her shoulders. She had a horrible pit in her stomach like she was going to throw up. Not even Carl could lessen her anxiety, but that didn't stop him from trying. He woke her up with a kiss on her forehead and a backrub. Melanie sighed into his touch but still felt the stress building in her body.
The community of Alexandria had spent all night preparing, but Melanie was worried it wouldn't be enough. They had pushed cars with spikes in front of the entrance to Alexandria to deter the Saviors, and Dwight had cut down some trees in the road on the way to Alexandria to slow them down. Rosita had taken the bombs they stole from the Saviors and hooked them up to a truck, then made a detonator. When Negan showed up, she would detonate the bomb; hopefully, that would be the beginning of the end.
Melanie didn't want to get up. She wished she could stay in bed with Carl forever and never leave his arms, but they had a job to do today. Melanie rolled out of bed and stood up as Carl sat up, "Leaving so soon?"
"I don't want to, but the Scavengers will be arriving soon, and Margot is probably wondering where I am," Melanie explained as she put on her shoes. Melanie kneeled in front of Carl before gently placing a kiss on his lips. "I'll see you soon."
Melanie gave Carl a small smile before she exited his house through his window. She shimmied down the drain pipe before walking the short distance across the yard to her own window. Melanie climbed up the side of the house and opened up her bedroom window, slipping through just as Margot opened up her bedroom door. Melanie froze in her spot, halfway in and halfway out the window. Margot sighed and leaned against the doorway, "We're about to go to war, and you decided to sleep at your boyfriend's house?"
"I decided to sleep at my boyfriend's house because we're going to war today," Melanie explained as she entered her bedroom window, closing it behind her. "I mean, who knows how this day is gonna end?"
"Do we have to have the sex talk?" Margot asked as she held two rifles in her hands.
Melanie chuckled slightly, "You wanna have the sex talk with me before we go to war with the Saviors?"
Margot crossed her arms over her chest, "I will if I have to."
Melanie walked over to one of the dressers in her bedroom that the Saviors didn't take and grabbed her collection of knives. She stuffed one in a holster on her thigh, one in the belt loop of her jeans, and two in each of her shoes, "I know how it works, Mar, I had that class before the world ended." Melanie walked over to Margot. "Not that my sex life is any of your business but... Carl and I aren't there yet."
