THE BAKER'S DAUGHTER AND THE DISTRICT'S LOCAL SONGBIRD WERE UNLIKELY FRIENDS. Their bond was unlike any others. They loved each other, hard, with undying loyalty to the other—no one could come between them, especially not a boy. However, when Lucy Gray begins dating fellow Covey member, Billy Taupe, Thalia quickly learned that her feelings for Lucy Gray were more than just platonic. Jealousy made her stomach curdle, as she wished upon every star that Lucy Gray would wake up and realise that Thalia was a much better choice than Billy Taupe. Yet, it still seemed like her feelings would remain unrequited. Thalia couldn't imagine a life without Lucy Gray. Even if it meant heartbreak and loss, Thalia would choose Lucy Gray every time, in every universe.

Lucy Gray had always believe that love was burning red—the colour of passion and fire. However, whenever she was with her best friend, she saw it for what it really was—golden. Lucy Gray had been betrayed by every lover, so she refused to confess her feelings for Thalia; she feared that it would ruin one of the only good things about her life. Thalia was a radiant beam of light that motivated her to keep going—the idea that her light could die when Lucy Gray eventually broke her heart, devastated the songbird. She had convinced herself that she was doomed to wound the good and trust the wicked.

After spending so much of their lives hiding their true feelings from each other, the idea that the two of them can share something as pure and beautiful as love didn't seem possible. It seemed like something was always holding them back, death games that were designed to punish the districts. An obsessive peacekeeper who followed Lucy Gray from the Capitol. Betrayal—lots of betrayal.

Thalia Mellark and Lucy Gray Baird wanted to be defined by the things they loved—not the things they hated, nor the things they was afraid of, and definitely not by the ghosts that haunted them at night. After all, you are what you love.

I don't wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you.

And now I see daylight, I only see daylight."
