When I woke up on the couch in the morning, I was more than confused until I realised exactly what had happened. It took me a few seconds, but one look at Cobe sleeping next to me and suddenly it felt like I was hit by a ton of rocks.
I sat up carefully so as not to wake him and glanced at my watch on the wall. Even though I felt awful, I still had duties to my pack and today in particular, it was my turn to be on duty at the security cameras. Luckily, my wolf still had an internal watch and woke us up in time, so I still had two hours before I had to relieve Cameron, who was on night watch.
Truth be told, I was glad for any distraction even if it meant being locked alone in a room with just me and the cameras for a few hours. I'd much rather be on patrol, but I took what I could get.
Speaking of patrol, I knew I should have warned them of the potential danger after yesterday, but that would have meant mentioning Tobias, and I wasn't ready for that yet. Even though I'd cut off contact with him in a panic, this way I still had a chance to work things out between us. The moment I told the pack about my hunter mate, that chance would quickly turn to zero.
With a sigh, I stood up and my footsteps automatically led me to the kitchen. Cobe had been my biggest support system once again, and I wanted to at least repay him with breakfast. He loved waffles and although I would never make them for myself, I owned a waffle maker just for these occasions.
Besides, concentrating on mixing the ingredients kept my mind occupied, at least for a while.
The moment I turned to the fridge, my gaze involuntarily fell on my phone on the cabinet where I'd left it the day before. The screen was black, as it should since I never turned it on again, and I could only wonder how many unread messages or missed calls were actually hiding in it.
I shook my head, pushing the thoughts away, and shifted my attention back to the fridge. I knew I would have to face my problems eventually, but it wasn't today.
Luckily, Cobe was a heavy sleeper, so I was able to quietly turn on the radio while I made us breakfast. I ended up getting so engrossed in the preparation that I made not only waffles but prepared a variety of fruits and melted chocolate for dipping. All that was missing was my brother and the coffee.
"Cobe?" I addressed him first in my head, knowing that it would be easier to wake him up that way, plus it was also nicer.
When he didn't respond right away, I went back into the living room so I could check the time and see how he was doing. He was still asleep in the same position I'd left him in and didn't seem to even stir while I was gone.
One would think that he could sleep like this because he was constantly travelling and was used to sleeping in different conditions, but the truth was elsewhere. Growing up with two siblings and parents who routinely burst out laughing at night when they met at the freezer getting ice cream, made him ready to sleep through any noise.
"Cobe? I made some waffles," I tried again, hoping my words would wake him up.
This time there was a change, and he stirred, letting out a mumble. His hands pulled the pillow under his head closer and ran his cheek over its surface. I knew he was almost awake, so I decided to speak up. "Cobe, get up. Breakfast is on the table."
"Waffles are waiting for you," I spoke to him in my head and added, "Cubby, get up."
When we were kids, we asked our parents if they could buy us a dog. They found it comical and told us that werewolves don't own dogs. But we were insistent and tried to convince them that we really needed a dog. They sorted it out in their own way. They made a schedule with the names of the three of us and each day one of us was given the role of the dog for one hour. We spent that hour in our wolf form pretending to be dogs. For some reason, we thought this was cool and even made up a dog name for each of us to distinguish us as wolves and us as dogs. Cobe was Cubby, Cora was Coco, and I was Bee.
