Despite the seriousness of the situation, I couldn't wipe the huge smile off my face. The kiss between me and Tobias unlocked a deeper understanding of each other and erased any doubts I had ever had about our relationship. He really cared for me.

"Stop smiling, or it will look suspicious," Sam warned me. As I was still on camera duty, we decided to go back to the security room and call the others here instead of going to them. For now, though, it was just the two of us, so I could afford to keep my head in the clouds for a while longer.

"I can't help it," I told him. Sam shook his head at me but made no further comment on my joy.

He didn't say anything to me the whole way back. Since I had promised to explain everything as soon as I could, I expected him to bombard me with questions right away, but he didn't. Instead, he looked too serious and seemed lost in his own thoughts.

My smile faltered a little, and I frowned. "You don't have any questions for me?"

Sam turned to me, raised his eyebrows, and stared at me as if I had asked him the stupidest question. "I don't know what you want me to say, Colby. Your mate is a hunter. You knew all along and you didn't tell anyone," he said, then frowned and added, "You didn't tell anyone, right?"

"Of course not," I confirmed. "I didn't want anyone to have to lie on my behalf."

"Good." He nodded, but immediately shook his head. "I can't believe it."

"Trust me. I know," I assured him. Never in my life would I have thought that my mate would be a hunter. Not that I often thought about who my mate was going to be, but I only ever thought about two possibilities - a wolf or a human.

"House of the hunters? Seriously?" He turned back to me, a little bit in disbelief and a little bit in anger.

Despite the seriousness of his question, I laughed. I wasn't surprised that he remembered that, because to be honest, it was even more ironic than my mate being a hunter.

"I stood by the car the whole time. I didn't dare go in," I admitted honestly. "But it looked like a normal house," I added.

Sam nodded, but then he shook his head once more. "Still. You're insane."

"I never claimed otherwise," I assured him.

Our conversation came to an end as there was a knock on the door and Mason, Milo, and Cobe entered the room.

"Sorry to keep you waiting," Milo spoke first. He didn't even have to apologise, as we knew that he was usually the one who had the biggest problem with just walking away and leaving everything as it was, as someone always had to be present with future fighters to make sure they didn't accidentally hurt themselves.

Once everyone was in the room, I got nervous and knew I couldn't screw up from that point on because the future of my mate bond depended on it. Sam noticed this and decided to take matters into his own hands.

"We've got an update on our hunter problem," he said first, and everyone suddenly turned serious.

"Have you seen anything on the cameras?" Mason asked immediately. That made sense, since I was supposed to spend the day here, and Sam had probably informed him when he came to see me.

"Not exactly," Sam said, turning to me. Our eyes met and he gave me a nod, a sign for me to continue.

All attention turned to me and I returned to my nervous state. I rested my elbows on my thighs and leaned forward, looking down at the floor, quickly thinking of what to say.

"I've been lying to you for the last few weeks," I admitted. I was afraid of the looks on their faces and even though it was cowardly, I kept my eyes on the ground. "I found my mate."
